Year 6 Parent Information Evening Overview and Curriculum Highlights

  1. Welcome to Year 6 Teachers: Kris Stanhope, Clayton Heggie, Brigitte van der Vossen and Matthew Cook

  2. Structure of the Evening 5.00pm – 5.30pm – With your teacher 5.40pm – 5.50pm – Mrs Webster in the Multipurpose Room 6.00pm - Miss Chen, Chinese Team Leader – In the Hall

Units of Inquiry • How we express ourselves International Mindedness provides a window into the cultures of others • Where we are in place and time People and places have histories which can be uncovered through a variety of sources. • Who we are Personal well being is dependent on a complex balance of inter-connected factors • Sharing the Planet: The way we live impacts the global environment (EXHIBITION) • How the world works Changing material to suit our needs impacts our world • How we organise ourselves Technology impacts on the systems used in the world of work and leisure

Curriculum and Learning Why Inquiry? • Build understanding of the world – to give them clearer conceptual frameworks that help them make meaning. • Help each child become an independent learner and to build their 21C capabilities as thinkers, collaborators, communicators, researchers and self managers. • To nurture students’ curiosity, courage and passions for learning From Kath Murdoch -August 2012

Curriculum and learning Subjects to be studied: • English - Oral Language - Listening and Speaking, Visual Language -Viewing and Presenting, Written Language – Reading, Writing • Focus: improving writing skills, comprehension • Mathematics - Number, Data Handling, Measurement, Shape and Space, Pattern and Function • Focus: improving basic facts, number sense • Social Studies, PSE, Science, Visual Art - integrated when meaningful through inquiry units • PE, Music (Specialist Subjects)

  6. Technology in Year 6 • Integrated within our classrooms to enhance learning. • Ipads • Itouches • Computers • Online websites and applications

  7. Homework • Students will receive their homework every two weeks • Subjects may include Mathematics, English, Inquiry, IT and Chinese • Reading daily • The grid will be on The Buzz and will be sent home as a hard copy in their homework books • Chinese is given out separately on the Buzz

  8. Educational Visits • Camp (Outward Bound in Sai Kung) Tuesday 4th to Friday 7th December 2011 • Parent meeting TBA • History Museum (parent help needed) • Happy Valley Cemetery (parent help needed)

  9. The Exhibition • Parent Information Evening – End of Term1, TBA • Exhibition – End of Term 2 The exhibition “represents a significant event in the life of a PYP school and student, synthesizing the essential elements of the PYP and sharing them with the whole school community. As a culminating experience it is an opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the IB learner profile that have been developing throughout their engagement with the PYP.”

  13. Secondary Dates 10st – 21nd September Apply for year 7 place in an ESF School. Login to Gateway. Refer to letter from Mr Fennelly Children going to ESF secondary schools will have ‘taster’ days in Term 2 and 3.
