  3. HB 5 in Wortham ISD What it is and is not: • Is: • Post-Secondary Readiness Bill that will allow for student flexibility and choice. Provides a pathway for two year college programs, four year college programs, certification programs, work force and military opportunities. • Opportunity for local school boards/ districts to have input into flexibility and choice in student opportunities • Local Accountability Measure to highlight things we do well in Wortham ISD and on our campuses. • Is not: • A Test Reduction Bill • A CTE Bill

  4. HB 5 in Wortham ISD What do we need to ensure, in addition to local school board flexibility? Rigor remains in ALL classes – TEKS continue to be addressed – Plans of study meet the needs of all students – Flexible Master Scheduling based on student interest – Career Awareness/Exploration/Planning for PK-12 – Post Secondary Readiness – Parental Engagement Component – Professional Awareness of all student opportunities

  5. HB 5 in Wortham ISD What do we need to avoid? Tracking students – Retreat from rigorous teaching of content areas that are not state tested – Grouping students into one endorsement – Master schedule driven only by staffing/certification

  36. Training for Counselors The District Counselor has been been receiving information and updates regarding HB5 on a monthly basis. Their participation on the HB5 Task Force has been another avenue to disseminate information and allow them to be part of the development of key processes, such as: • Transition process planning • Course selection planning • 4 Year Plan Development • College and Career system decisions • Plan of Study development • Endorsement discussions • Once the legislature has finalized the process, the counselor will be trained again regarding the final plan to provide information to parents, students and staff. The counseling subcommittee will continue to meet to: • Synchronize transition processes (parent endorsement presentations, course selection, 4 year plans, college prep course enrollment, etc.) • Develop plans of study

  37. Parental Engagement Component The topics include: The 2014-15 Graduation Plans House Bill 5 Legislative changes Course selection and 4 Year Plans District processes supporting College Readiness opportunities State legislative parental requirements Transition processes for 7th and 8th graders

Collaboration is Key The success of the true intent of HB 5 lies with our commitment to: • Continuous discussion with the WISD School Board and our community of stakeholders • Collaboration between all departments and representatives • Collaboration with Higher Ed Institutions to support the math and ELA college prep courses that have been developed • Continued focus of district task force to focus on the 3 key provisions of HB5: • Graduation credits requirements and enhancements • Endorsements • Accountability, assessment, and accreditation provisions • Local and regional opportunities to share the “good news” about HB 5 • Clear and concise documentation related to HB 5: • Benefits of graduating with an endorsement/Designation of Endorsement • Opt-in form for students participating in the Arts and Humanities endorsement to substitute the advanced science credit with another course related to the endorsement • Benefits of enrolling in a college preparatory course • PGP for middle school and high school • Partnerships with entities such as Navarro College, UT Odessa Alief ISD

  39. WISD call to Action WISD will send a clear message to stakeholders. WISD Central Instruction will support our campus leaders for a successful implementation WISD will offer all five endorsements for student flexibility and post secondary goals WISD will continue to lead the state in “Preparing Students for Tomorrow while Caring for Them Today”
