  4. Look at the first paragraph of the chapter. How does Ishiguro foreshadow events to come in this passage? • What was the ‘tokens controversy’ about? Chapter 4 Questions

  5. ‘All I can tell you today is that it’s for a good reason. A very important reason. But if I tried to explain it to you now, I don’t think you’d understand. One day, I hope, it’ll be explained to you’ – Miss Lucy (p40) How does this help to explain why Madame takes the artwork?

  6. What impressions do you have of Miss Lucy? What type of person is she? How does she feel about the students at Hailsham? • Items from the Sales come ‘from outside’. Consider the implications of WHERE the items come from, and WHO donates them? Chapter 4 Questions
