  1. DATE: ______/_______/_______ NAME: ____________________________ Math-7 CLASSWORK “changing attributes” Discussion Questions: What is an attribute ? In the lab, we found that doubling just one of the attributes in a rectangular prism does what to the volume of the prism? What about tripling an attribute? Will doubling one attribute of a rectangular prism make the surface area also double? Examples: 5) One prism has a length of 15 cm., a width of 12 cm., and a height of 6 cm., so its volume is 1,080 cm.³ If its width were changed to 4 cm., what would the new volume be? 6) Mary’s jewelry box is 6 in. long, 4 in. wide, and 5 in. tall. Her friend, Lisa, has a jewelry box with a volume of 240 in.³ If the width and height of both boxes are equal, what is length of Lisa’s box? 7) A rectangular pool is 20 ft. long, 10.5 ft. wide, and 3 ft. deep throughout. If another pool is the same size, but is 6 ft. deep throughout, what is the volume of the second pool? 8) One rectangular prism has a volume of 40 in.³ Another rectangular prism has a volume of 20 in.³ The length and width of both prisms are the same. If the height of the larger prism is 4 in. , then what is the height of the smaller prism? 9) If the volume of one prism is half the volume of another prism, what are some possible attribute numbers for both prisms? In other words, what could be the length, width, and height of both the smaller and larger prisms?

  2. DATE: ______/_______/_______ NAME: ____________________________ Math-7 Practice “changing attributes” • Answer the following questions: • A rectangular prism has a volume of 18 cm³. If the height of the prism triples, and the other two dimensions stay the same, what is the new volume? • One sandbox holds 6 ft.³ of sand. A larger sandbox holds 18 ft.³ of sand. If the length and width of both sandboxes are equal, and the height of the smaller sandbox is 1 ft., then what is the height of the larger sandbox? • Kirk’s pencil box is 6 in. long, 4 in. wide, and 2 in. tall. He gets another pencil box that is the same size, except that it is 2 in. taller (4 in. in height). Compare the volume of the original pencil box to the volume of the taller pencil box (be specific). • Compare the surface area of both the original pencil box and the taller pencil • box (be specific)? • One pick-up truck bed measures 8 ft. long, 5 ft. wide, and 2 ft. in depth. If another pick-up truck bed measures 12 ft. long, 5 ft. wide, and 2 ft. in depth, what is the volume of the longer truck bed? • One rectangular prism has a volume of 15 in.³ Another rectangular prism has a volume of 60 in.³ The length and width of both prisms are the same. If the height of the smaller prism is 5 in. , then what is the height of the larger prism? • If the volume of one rectangular prism is twice the volume of another prism, what could be the length, width, and height of both the smaller and larger rectangular prisms?
