  1. The Serenity Prayer God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next.   5. Call of Abram • After father’s death • Called by God to go to the land that God would make Abram a great nation • Abram becomes one of the Patriarchs • Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph

  6. God’s Three Promises • Make Abram a great nation –Exodus • Great name –David • Source of blessing for the whole world –Jesus

  7. To Receive These Promises • Abram needed to: • Trust God • Move to a foreign land (Canaan)

  8. Why did Abram Have to Move? • To get away from pagan influences • To teach us about commitment and faith • Faith ALWAYS involves risks –placing hope in something unseen

  9. 10 yrs. Later • Moved to Canaan –but no son • Seems hopeless • Sarai (wife) is 76/ Abram about 86 • Decided to “help God along” with His Promises

  10. Abram and Sarai“Helping God Along” • Sarai –gives servant Hagar to Abram to sleep with • Why? • Code of Hammurabi: if first wife infertile, a second wife may be taken • Son would be the true son of sterile wife • Second wife DISPLACED –if she has a son

  11. Ishmael • Hagar’s son –Ishmael • God promises that he would have sons • But, covenant passed through Isaac • Root of problem between Israelis and Arabs • Judaism vs. Islam

  12. God Made His Promises More Sure • “New People” –the gift of new names • Amplified/restated spoken promises • Sign of circumcision • Sign of kept promises • Marking of God

  13. Covenant with Abram • God: • Give descendants, multitude of nations • Land of Canaan • Abram: • Honor God alone • Circumcision • Names change: • Abram –Abraham • Sarai –Sarah • God deals equally with men and women

  14. Visitors • Abraham • Sees 3 travelers • One God, the other two angels • Invites them to stay awhile • Told that he will have a son • Sarah laughs • Sarah has son –Isaac (“he laughs”)

  18. Sodom and Gomorrah • Angels sent to Sodom –Lot’s house • Lot –takes them in • Citizens –want to have their way with the visitors • Worse sin –against hospitality

  19. Sins of Sodom • Consensual homosexual acts • Uncharitable/abusive to guests • Wanted to humiliate visitors • Wanted to absorb the power of the Angels

  20. Sodom and Gomorrah • Lot held responsible • Lot –tries reason • Offers virgin daughters instead • Angels –blinded the crowd/protect Lot • Angels –warn Lot/ get Out!

  21. Sodom and Gomorrah • Sons-in-laws –refuse to leave • Wife –looks back/becomes pillar of salt • Must be totally committed to God

  22. Sodom and Gomorrah • Destruction • Sulfur forced from earth –earthquake • Evidence –city on fault line/destruction by fire
