  1. Le Subjonctif Unit 2, Part 1

  2. Que disent les phrases suivantes? • Il faut que tu parles français en classe. • Il faut qu’elle arrose les fleurs. • Il faut que vous finissiez les devoirs. • Il faut que tu dises la vérité.

  3. The previous sentences express a NECESSITY or OBLIGATION. • This is called the SUBJUNCTIVE mood. It is used after certain verbs and expressions. • The subjunctive is almost always introduced by que

  4. To conjugate the subjunctive for most regular and irregular verbs … Take the “ils” form of the present indicative tense and drop the -ent. Add the appropriate endings, as follows: e ions es iez e ent

  5. Example: finir je finis nous finissons tu finis vous finissez il/elle finit ils/elles finissent finiss stem: que je finisse que nous finissions que tu finisses que vous finissiez qu’il/elle finisse qu’ils/elles finissent

  6. Example: attendre j’attends nous attendons tu attends vous attendez il/elle attend ils/elles attendent attend stem: que j’attende que nous attendions que tu attendes que vous attendiez qu’il/elle attende qu’ils/elles attendent

  7. For regular –er verbs, je, tu, il/elle, and ils/elles look the same in the present tense and subjunctive. • Pour maintenant, on va dire qu’on utilise le subjonctif après l’expression “il faut que” (Il y a d’autres expressions pour le subjonctif.) Tournez à la page 79 et complétez l’exercice 1.
