  1. School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering MEng / BEng Manufacturing Engineering and ManagementUCAS codes H716 (MEng)/ HN72 (BEng) • Manufacturing is a global activity and in the UK aerospace, automotive, food and medical products are major growth areas. • Our degrees provide students with the knowledge and skills for producing high quality products at the lowest cost, highest quality and in the shortest time. These skills are relevant to any manufacturing sector. • Key Features • Engineering and management principles are taught with a strong industrial emphasis • Management teaching is in collaboration with the University Business School • A wide range of optional modules can be chosen in years 3 and 4 including: Lean Manufacturing, Aerospace and Food Manufacture, Technology and Knowledge Management, Project Management, Marketing, Modelling, Biomedical Structures, Conservation and Recycling etc • MEng students follow a more industrially focussed route with a full semester placement in industry in year 4. • The skills that graduates develop make them highly employable with engineering, service and consultancy companies • The degrees are accredited by the IET • Preferred Status and Employment • Since 1997 a number of industrial companies including Rolls-Royce, IMI and Proctor and Gamble have awarded the degrees a ‘preferred’ status and provide the School with a range of projects, MEng placements, industrial visits and speakers, prizes and they specifically target graduates from the degrees. • Employment prospects are excellent with graduates employed by engineering and consumer goods companies in many industrial sectors and by many financial institutions and consultancies. Recent employers include Rolls Royce, Ford, Shell, BAE systems, British Sugar, Proctor and Gamble, Unilever, Goldman Sachs, Accenture and Deloitte. • We’re looking for highly motivated students who want an engineering and management degree and can offer the skills that industry really needs. • Typical entry grades are ABB to BCC. We also offer bursaries to high flying students. 2. School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Year 1 • Design & Manufacture 1 • Business Operations • Electromechanical Systems 1 • Mechanics of Solids 1 • Engineering Mathematics 1 • Materials & Materials Forming • Industrial Design • Professional Studies • Engineering Mathematics 2 Qualifying Stage – Part 1, Years 1 and 2In the first two years of the BEng and MEng programmes the course structure is the same. It provides a firm foundation in design, manufacturing processes, operations management and human factors and is underpinned by core modules in mathematics, statistics and engineering science. These core themes are enhanced throughout the programme and in year 2 students have 30 credits of options to develop particular manufacturing or management specialisms. A group-based design and manufacturing project is undertaken in collaboration with an industrial company and recently the projects have been with Rolls-Royce and Airbus. Students design and manufacture prototypes and generate production solutions to an industrial problem. Business plans and final presentations are made to the company. BEng, Year 3 The flexibility and wide range of optional module choices continue in year 3. There are over 20 optional modules available to enable students to help tailor their degrees to their own specific interests and career routes. In the BEng programme all students undertake an individual project that accounts for 25% of the year. Students can select their individual project with a research group in the School or with the University Business School and the majority of these projects are industrially related. MEng, Years 3 and 4 The MEng programme has a more industrially focussed theme with an increased depth and breadth of specialist knowledge and understanding. In year 3 students undertake a series of industrial visits to analyse and evaluate current industrial practice. In year 4 students are placed in industry to work on an individual industrial project and recent companies have included Rolls-Royce, Bosch, IMI, Proctor and Gamble etc. Many students are then employed by the companies. Common 1st and 2nd year for all Manufacturing Engineering and Management courses Year 2 • Design for Manufacture • Near Net Shape Manufacture • Production & Inventory Management • Year long Manufacturing Project • Automated Manufacture • Probabilistic and Statistical Techniques for Engineers • Ergonomics in Design • Quantitative Decision Making Year 3 BEng • BEng - Individual Project • MEng - Investigatory Methods for Innovation in Engineering and Management • Flexible Automated Manufacture • Management of Quality • Operations Strategy • Plant Location & Design Year 4 MEng • Professional Development Project • Individual Project: Manufacturing Engineering and Management • Rapid Product Development • Advanced Production Planning & Control Module Options Year 3 Options include: Advanced Metal Forming, Concurrent Engineering, Food Processing & Manufacture, Integrated Aerospace Design, Manufacturing Process Capability, Polymer Engineering, Cognitive Ergonomics, Conservation and Recycling of Materials, Work Organisation and Job Design, Appraisal of Capital Projects, Aerospace Manufacturing Technology, Fibre Reinforced Composites Engineering, Joining Technology, Introduction to Transport Materials, Software Engineering, Project Management, Human-Computer Systems, Modelling and Simulation, Risk Management, Marketing,, Languages and up to 20 credits of modules from other Schools (subject to approval from the Course Director) Year 4 Options include: Lean Manufacturing, Safety and Human Reliability, Technology and Knowledge Management, Managing Operations & Change, Project Management, Languages and up to 20 credits of modules from other Schools (subject to approval from the Course Director) www.nottingham.ac.uk/schoolm3
