Importance of the Bay • Environmental • Estuarine ecosystem • Home to over 3,600 different species and populations of plants and animals • Water flow from the land often carries essential nutrients for plant growth • Societal • Provides the people with about 500 million pounds of food per year • Transportation route • Creates a vibrant economy • Job growth

Current Laws in VA • Act 2.5 of the Code of Virginia (Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act) • Created and implemented in 1988 by the Virginia General Assembly • Made up of 14 different sections • Aims for an increase of water quality improvement within its watershed • Most important provisions of the act dictate the management and planning of land use in order to reduce negative impacts on water quality • Balanced by state and local governments

  4. Problems with conservation • Increased pollution • Development • Climate change

Sharks in the bay • 14+ species in the Chesapeake Bay • The relationship between sharks and bay • Birthing and nursing grounds • Importance • Sharks are crucial to maintaining the biodiversity • Conservation and species protection • Negative public perception of sharks • No state-specific shark protection laws, but there are federal protections • Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA) • Shark Finning Prohibition Act of 2000

Rays in the bay • 13+ species in the Chesapeake Bay • With the reduction of sharks in the Bay, there is a abundance of cownose rays • Collapse in the commercial bivalve fishery • Conservation and species protection • Dismal • “Save the Bay, Eat a Ray” Campaign • The Maryland General Assembly passed Senate Bill 268 • Bans cownose ray fishing tournaments in state waters
