Safe Working Procedure - Handling Materials Set your work objectives to include; “...tasks/ activities are to be completed on time and in a manner that does not cause harm to the employees, customers, other non-employees, or the company/ organisation.” • Three key questions to start with are… • What can cause harm? • What are you doing about it? • Is it enough? Remember the process is simple but it is NOT to be considered simplistic.

  7. Safe Working Procedure - Handling Materials • Manual Handling • Arrange the work activities to avoid manual handling, where possible. • Instruct all employees in manual handling control measures, and • Train employees in correct manual handling techniques. Insert equipment image

Safe Working Procedure - Handling Materials • Mechanical handling equipment • Ensure that employees using powered mechanical handling equipment, (e.g. fork-lifts, mobile elevating work platforms) are competent and authorised. • All mechanical handling equipment must conform to the relevant national statutory requirements and bear the statutory markings (e.g. CE marks, Safe Working Load). Safe Working Procedure - Handling Materials • Storage • Store layouts and stacking arrangements to be designed • To permit ease of access, and • To facilitate appropriate load bearing requirements. • To properly segregate incompatible or volatile materials/ substances. Ensure that where there is a statutory requirement only competent stores personnel handle materials and substances (e.g. pesticides).

Safe Working Procedure - Handling Materials • Transport • Ensure that pedestrians and vehicles are properly segregated on sites and within business locations. • Ensure that the appropriate authorities are informed of abnormal loads or dangerous goods before starting to transport materials. • Obtain all the relevant health and safety advice in relation to the transportation of dangerous goods or substances.

Safe Working Procedure - Handling Materials • All drivers must… • Be authorised persons and competent, • Be deemed medically fit (drivers of heavy goods vehicles), • Undergo regular medical examinations. • Be responsible for ensuring that their vehicles are roadworthy, • Ensure weight limits are adhered to, and • Ensure that loads are evenly distributed and properly secured.

Safe Working Procedure - Handling Materials • Inspection, testing and maintenance • All mechanical handling equipment, vehicles and other road-going equipment is to be regularly inspected, tested and maintained. • Mechanical work equipment and vehicles are to be maintained by competent people.

Storing goods and equipment • The safety control measures, including storage location and security are to be communicated to authorised personnel. • A register of authorised personnel, including notification of any restrictions or special conditions that apply is to be maintained Authorisation is required before any goods, vehicles or equipment are stored away from the business location.
