PHILOSOPHY It is the English Department’s desire to identify the presentation of non-documented information and to alert the student to the potential dangers of plagiarism, not to determine student intent. As a middle school, our primary purpose is to prepare students for the challenges of high school. Understanding and avoiding all forms of plagiarism is a necessary preparation for their academic futures.

  23. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM Friends Christian School Plagiarism Policy III. CONSEQUENCES Obviously, there are varying degrees of plagiarism. Therefore, the consequences also will vary based on the extent of non-documented information or language. • Misuse of Language – This is the lowest level of plagiarism. It involves intentional or unintentional use of exact words or phrases in student work. While there are a limited number of words in the English language, if a student has used undocumented vocabulary or sentence structure that is atypical of previous work, the teacher may request to see the source. If misuse is confirmed, there will be a deduction of points from the student’s grade on the specific assignment, not exceeding 10%.

It involves the presentation of extended sections of non-documented information in student work (an abundance of atypical vocabulary, multiple sentences, or entire paragraphs). Again the teacher may request to see the source. If extended use is confirmed, the student will receive a zero on the specific assignment.

  25. THE DANGEROUS WATERS OF PLAGIARISM Friends Christian School Plagiarism Policy • Blatant Plagiarism – This is the highest level of plagiarism. It involves the reproduction of a report or essay entirely from another source (book, web site, another student’s work, etc.) Confirmation of this level of plagiarism results in the student receiving a zero on the specific assignment, plus disciplinary action to be determined by the administration.
