NEAR RHYME • Near rhyme occurs between words with similar (not identical) sounds. • There are 3 types of near rhyme: • Alliteration • Assonance • Consonance
The repetition of similar consonant sounds, often at the beginning of words. EXAMPLE: Four fat frogs fishing for frightened fish. Alliteration
Assonance is the repetition of the same vowel ( A,E,I,O, & U) sound. EXAMPLE: Robustly treading, I will see Deeply breathing, I will know Always being, I will wonder Ever reaching, I will meld Warrior with a beginner’s mind. ASSONANCE
Consonance is the repetition of the same consonant sound in words with different main vowels. Examples: Little, rattle, bottle Mice, space, truce Consonance
Eye rhymes occur when 2 or more words look like they rhyme rather than sound like they rhyme. EXAMPLES: There upon her jewel crowned head She wore King Rupert silver bead. You can climb the root, Foot following foot in the dim air. Eye/Visual Rhyme
Occurs at the end of lines. To determine end rhyme scheme, assign a letter to each end word. Lines with last words that rhyme are given the same letter. CLOUDS Clouds float free upon the sky-A But everything’s still when an eagle dies-A It’s graceful and quick with lightening speed-B And snags a fish without being seen-B But people shoot eagles just like they’re gang-C It’s like a shooting a son-it only brings pain.-C END RHYME
