  1. In August 1945 the USA dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima to end World War Two. 246,000 people were killed by the bombs being dropped The dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan Many thousands more die in the following years from radiation related illnesses.

  2. Invention of the Printing Press The printing press was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in 1439. Before his invention the only way to get copies of newspapers, books etc. was to copy it out by hand. His invention changed the world as people were able to get information to everyone across the world through mass publication.

  3. Black Death Hits Britain Between 1348 and 1350 Europe was hit by a terrible disease – bubonic plague. It killed around 50% of the people in the whole of Europe.

  4. Invention of the Wheel Scientists believe that the wheel was invented around 4000BC. The invention of the wheel meant that large heavy objects could be transported across long distances.

  5. Landing on the Moon On 20th July 1969 US astronaut, Neil Armstrong became the first man to step on the surface of the moon.

  6. First Harry Potter Novel Published 30th June 1997 was when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published – by the year 2000 the series of books were a worldwide success and encouraged huge numbers of children across the world to read.

  7. Twin Tower bombings On the 11th September 2001 terrorists hijacked four US planes which were filled with passengers. Two were flow in into the World Trade Centre in New York, one was flown into the Pentagon and one never made it to it’s destination and crashed down. Thousands of people died in the attacks and it lead to the USA declaring war on Afghanistan and later on Iraq.

  8. First antibiotic In 1928 Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin which was the basis for developing antibiotics. Antibiotics were able to fight many bacterial infections (diseases) that there had been no treatment before. Many people’s lives have been saved by antibiotics with diseases like blood poisoning – septicaemia and tuberculosis.

  9. Fall of the Roman Empire The Roman Empire spanned across most of Europe and ruled for around 500 years. They were seen as the greatest civilisation and were the envy of the world. After the Roman Empire fell – Europe was plunged into the Dark Ages where literature, art and culture were practically non-existent for the next 400 years.
