Objectives • To know how to read images in order to explain and justify ideas • To put this in to practice in history, and be able to argue for or against the dropping of the atomic bomb Outcomes • All can deliver good oral explanations • All can read images to argue for and against the dropping of the atomic bomb

  3. Starter Activity FOR OR AGAINST? There are 2 sides to every story… • Around the room are several images. You must sort the statements on your desk and stick them on to each picture in the correct place – for or against? • Only 2 of you are allowed out of your seat at any given time! • Can you spot the red herrings?!

  7. Explaining sentences… FOR Describing sentences… Describing words… AGAINST

  8. Connectives Card Game One person in the group takes a card from the ‘picture’ pile (white cards), and a card from the ‘connectives’ pile (green cards). Using this picture and this connective the player must form an ‘explaining’ sentence. For example: Using Connectives CONSEQUENTLY + = England lost to Portugal in the Quarter Finals of the World cup, consequently David Beckham has resigned as England Captain. After the first player has completed their sentence, each of the remaining players must choose a different‘connectives’ card and make a sentence using the same picture. Then change picture and start again!

  9. Your opinion… Can the dropping of the atomic bomb be justified? Position yourself along the opinion line, according to your overall opinion about the dropping of the bomb. Remember to be ready to EXPLAIN/JUSTIFY your position!
