  1. The ultimate questions of the ENTIRE UNIVERSE!!

  2. Where did we come from? Where did we come from?

  3. Why are we here? Why are we here?

  4. How did we get here? How did we get here?

  5. How did all this come to be? How did all this come to be?

  6. These questions and more

  7. Evolution vs. Religion • Yes, generally evolution assumes no creator. • Why? Because it’s hard to prove scientifically. • Does evolution exclude a creator? • -No…so don’t panic!

  8. No worries! • Can you believe in evolution and believe in a creator? • Yes. • Can you believe in evolution and not believe in a creator? • Yes. • Do you have to believe in evolution? • No. • Do you have to believe in anything? • No.

  9. We ‘are’ because one group of fishes had a peculiar fin anatomy that could transform into legs for terrestrial creatures; because the earth never froze entirely during an ice age; because a small and tenuous species, arising in Africa a quarter of million years ago, had managed, so far, to survive by hook and by crook. We may yearn for a ‘higher’ answer -- but none exists. S. J. Gould

  10. Julian Huxley “We are as much a product of blind forces as is the falling of a stone to earth or the ebb and flow of the tides. We have just happened, and man was made flesh by a long series of singularly beneficialaccidents.”

  11. “I readily admit that no species has even been known to engender another, and there is no absolutely definite evidence that such a thing has ever taken place. Nonetheless, I believe evolution to be just as certain as if it had been objectively proved.” Yves Delage

  12. “In effect, much of the evolution of the major groups of animals has to be taken on trust ... the evidence that supports it is not sufficiently strong to allow us to consider it as anything more than a working hypothesis.” G. A. Kerkut

  13. How can you know? • Learn to sort facts from interpretations of those facts. • Challenge all sides to present their evidence, not just the acceptable dogmas • Study with an open mind!

  14. Eta Carinae star explosion Expanding Universe M16 star nursry M87A super nova Fusion M82 galactic jet Galactic Rotation The Heavens Are Changing

  15. island isolations Many Examples of Adaptations

  16. Old School General Theory of Evolution General Theroy of Evolution But where is theevidencethat this “just happened”... “by a long series of singularly beneficial accidents?”

  17. time primates mammals insects reptiles amphibians arthropods fish worms chordates plants algaes chemicals Old School General Theory of Evolution • Pond Scum -> Man • Expands small change to ALL change • No proven mechanism • order <- disorder • life <- nonlife • kinds <- species • No major branches recorded in fossils • Not observed today • THIS is the hypothesis that denies creation according to many religions.

  18. New theories are developing… • Punctuated Equilibrium by S. J. Gould • More like a bunch of separate branches evolving. • Explains “missing links” in fossil record.

  19. Think about what you’ve learned … • Look for patterns, similarities, design • What does it tell YOU?

  20. Citric Acid Cycle Highly Complex Designs

  21. VERY complex… VERY complex…

  22. Similar Structures & Organs

  23. Similar Cellular Structures

  24. William Paley, 1818 As an intricately designed watch requires a skillful watchmaker, so the universe and life require an adequate designer and creator. The Watchmaker Argument

  25. Biological similarity comes from common ancestry HOW? Similarity argues strongly for a common designer. WHO? Darwin vs. Paley

  26. Evidence & Interpretation • The Evidence • similarities • The Interpretation • Common Ancestry, Descent & Change or • Common Design, Superior Designer or Both?

  27. YOU decide! But don’tbe afraid of learning about it……..
