  1. The Ultimate Goal The ultimate goal of the WFC System is to help the customer find a job. To accomplish this goal, customers need to access information successfully, maximize their job searching efforts and employ a comprehensive job search approach. With so much information on job searching, capturing and presenting all the information to customers can be challenging. Let’s take a look at a scenario. WorkForce Center

  2. Welcome to WFC “Hi. My name is Antwan. I need help writing a resume and finding a job, any job.” “Hello. My name is Gao. Welcome to the WFC. How may I help you today?”

  3. Scenario How should Gao help Antwan in this situation? Direct Antwan to the computer, provide a list of online job boards, refer printed materials and workshops, and help him write a resume. Explain to Antwan that an the job searching process takes more than a resume to find a job. Conducting an effective job search takes a comprehensive approach. Click Back Click

  4. Basic Approach This is a good start. However, this is a basic approach to job searching. For Antwan to maximize his job searching efforts, he’ll need to prepare for the process, learn about branding, make connections, understand how to tap into the hidden job market and gain valuable tips to land a job. This approach renders limited growth of job searching skills, connections and opportunitiesthat lead to employment. Back

  5. Comprehensive Approach This a comprehensive approach to job searching. Antwan will learn more himself, how to make connections through social networking, tap into the hidden job market, create a professional image through branding, and learn tips that will help him land the job. This approach renders stronger self-awareness of knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs), life-long job searching skills, connections and opportunities that lead to employment. Back

  6. Maximizing Job Searching Efforts As we have seen in the Customer A and Customer B examples, the level of assistance depends on the level of KSAs customers possess. To ensure that each customer has the opportunity to maximize his or her job searching efforts, we’ll use the Job Searching Guide to illustrate a comprehensive approach for customers at all levels.

  7. Job Searching Guide – Elements “The Job Searching Steps Guide is a step-by-step guide that illustrates a comprehensive approach to the job searching process. Getting Started Branding – Showing Your Best Self Job Searching Tools Researching Job Searching Stepping Stones Landing a Job To help you understand how to use the guide, each section has a box that explains the contents along with a box of Planned Actions to guide the customer on activities.”

  8. Section 1: Getting Started 1. Getting Started “The beginning is the most important part of the work.” ~ Plato This section shows the customer how to prepare for the job searching process. The customer creates a foundation by learning how to get organized, develop problem-solving skills, identify personal attributes, and develop life-long job searching skills throughout the process. • Planned Actions • Obtain supplies, personal information and documentation • Identify barriers and solutions • Perform assessment exercises • Perform the skills transfer exercise with the JobStat tool to identify occupational choices

Branding – Showing Your Best Self This section illustrates how branding creates a professional image both in-person and online. The customer reviews her personal attributes, i.e. KSAs, and leverages that information to brand herself and conducts a personal research of herselfonline to find out what others know about her. • Planned Actions • Research name on internet • Review personal attributes and select the best KSAs that say, “This is who I am.” • Create or improve branding tools that reflect a professional image

Job Searching Tools This section shows the customer how to create job searching tools that reflect his personal brand, showcase his accomplishments, work history and education and leverage social networking sites to make connections. • Planned Actions • Create or improve branding tools that reflect a professional image, such as an email address and voicemail message • Showcase accomplishments • Create a resume template • Tailor and post resumes specific to jobs • Create an online presence

Researching This section illustrates how customers can use research as a tool to gain knowledge about job searching methods, make a good impression, explore careers and employers, and develop labor market intelligence. • Planned Actions • Research articles on job searching strategies • Explore careers • Research employers • Research labor market information • If not completed in Section One, perform the Job Skills Transfer assessment tool

Job Searching This section illustrates how to leverage temporary assignments to gain skills and create opportunities, develop connections and gain knowledge through social networking sites, and find jobs in the open and hidden job markets. • Planned Actions • Work temporary assignments to develop a work history • Create an online presence • Contact companies directly to inquire about opportunities • Maximize internet job boards

Stepping Stones This section illustrates how to gain work experience, skills and references through temporary assignments, internships and volunteer opportunities. • Planned Actions • Contact temporary employment agencies for temp-to-hire, contract or direct hire employment opportunities • Check into paid and non-paid internships • Check into volunteer opportunities

Landing the Job “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” ~ Benjamin Franklin This section illustrates the last step, yet, the important step in the job searching process: getting ready to meet the employer, avoiding mistakes, being smart about conducting company research, planning questions, and following up. • Planned Actions • Research tips and common mistakes • Prepare for the interview • Research the company to gain knowledge about it • Follow up with hiring manager after the interview

As the customer learns about preparing for the job search, tapping into the open and hidden job markets, branding, leveraging social networking to make connections, and getting ready for an interview, he or she develops life-long job searching skills and conducts a more successful job search.”
