  38. Analyzing Perspectives

  39. Analyzing Perspectives Mini-lesson

  40. Analyzing perspectives ????????? ????????? Issue or situation ?????????

  41. Emphasis is on “analyzing” • The initial goal is to understand, • not to change or even accept other perspectives

  42. Analyzing Perspectives …the process of identifying multiple perspectives on an issue and examining the reasons behind each. • For an issue or situation about which people react differently, • Identify one perspective (yours or one you are aware of) and explain the reasons that perspective. • Identify different perspectives and, for each, explain the reasons. • Reflect on your work and articulate • what you notice? • what surprises/troubles you? • what is confusing/clear? • Decide if it would valuable to explore more perspectives or analyze deeper any of the perspectives identified.

  43. Analyzing perspectives Be careful that you offer reasons underlying the perspective and not just a restatement of the perspective. Examples: We should not require students to wear uniforms to school because it is just wrong.(restatement) We should not require students to wear uniforms to school because it denies students the ability to express their unique identity. (reason) We should require students to wear uniforms to school because it is a good idea. (restatement) We should require students to wear uniforms to school to prevent students from wearing inappropriate clothes that distract others from their studies. (reason)

  44. Analyzing perspectives Recommendation: Use a graphic organizer to record and reflect on your analysis.

  45. Analyzing perspectives • For an issue or situation about which people react differently, • Identify one perspective (yours or one you are aware of) and explain the reasons that perspective.
