  2. Approval of examiners • Supervisor > School > FGR (with some variation) • Details on how to submit on FGR website • PG coordinator and Faculty advised • Expectations about NZ examiner • They will attend the oral • Cost maxima

  3. Submission of thesis • 3 hard copies AND e-copy submitted • Application for PhD examination form and other documentation listed there • Student must be enrolled and have been enrolled for 3 months • Examiners must be approved • Thesis cannot be examined until all conditions met

  4. Examination of thesis • Examiners’ availability confirmed • School/Supervisor contacted if not • Thesis sent out to examiners • Tentative date for for oral set • 8 weeks allowed for response • Overseas examiner asked to submit questions for oral

  5. Candidate • Candidate is “under examination” • Ceases paying fees on submission for examination • Retains access to university facilities if and when required until thesis lodged in library

  6. On receipt of examiners’ reports • Dean FGR signs one of • Oral can proceed • Oral cannot yet proceed • consensus • referee • No oral (presumed failure) • candidate may demand oral

  7. Assuming all is in order • Date for oral finalised • Candidate, supervisor, School, Faculty all informed • Chair appointed • Travel for NZ Examiner organised • Oral held

  8. Oral • Chair, candidate, internal examiner, NZ examiner, supervisor(s) all expected to be present in Wellington • Overseas examiner generally just present questions through the examiners present • Very reluctant to accept candidates video-linking in because of loss of good communication and personal contact

  9. Outcome of oral • Chair informs candidate of recommendation • Recommendation made to FGR • Form stating what corrections needed and timeframe sent to FGR by Chair

  10. Following oral • Candidate, supervisor, School, Faculty told of outcome • School oversees corrections and signs off on them (often = internal examiner) • If more time required, candidate applies to FGR

  11. Degree awarded and candidate invited to graduate • On receipt of • “PhD Examination Outcome Summary Report” • Sign-off that required amendments have been made • Receipt from library showing thesis lodged

  12. If “Revise and resubmit” • The candidate re-enrols for at least 6 months • The candidate has a new examination (usually with the same examiners) • There may or may not be a second oral

  13. Summary • Four key decision points at which many people notified • Thesis accepted for examination • Date for oral set • Outcome of the oral • Award of the degree
