Patience needed Learning To Wait On God – James 5:7-11
James 5:7-8 -- Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains. You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.
I. A Lifetime of Patience • Be patient until the coming of the Lord • Second coming? • Coming to aid the mistreated?
How patient? • Like the farmer waiting on rain • Like the prophets – suffering and patience • Like Job in his endurance
Workable definitions of patience • Self restraint that does not retaliate • Ability to accept delay or disappointment • Ability to press on during adversity • Calm endurance trusting in God
How To Illustrate Impatience? • Hungry baby • Woman with a ruined scarf • The futility of impatience – crying over spilt milk.
How will patience help us? • Waiting on God • God’s time isn’t our time – Wait! • We don’t always know God’s will – Listen! • Trusting God – Hebrews 13:5 – “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you….” – Trust!
II. How Do We Grow In Patience • Abide in Jesus • John 15:4-7 – Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself…so neither can you unless you abide in Me…for apart from Me you can do nothing…If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you….
Slow Down To Worshipful Level • Exodus 20:11 -- For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
Exodus 31:14 • Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people.
Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff • Phil. 4:6 -- Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. • Psalm 94:19 – “When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul.”
Let God Handle The Big Stuff • Psalm 55:22 -- Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you;He will never allow the righteous to be shaken
Be Content • James 5:9,11 • Do not complain against one another so you may not be judged. • The Lord is full of compassion and is merciful
