    1. 09 Jan 2012 Increasing Revenues through Green Initiatives Efficient Air-Conditioning & Ventilation System Design for Automobile Showrooms & Workshops Presentation by: Sanjay Khatri Armstrong Engineering Services HVAC Consultants

    2. Automobile Showrooms & Workshops Area Segregation Showrooms Display Area: Normally Double Height, Large Glass Areas with High Visibility, Air - Conditioned Office Areas: Sales / Marketing, Accounts, Accessories, MD Room, Discussions / Meeting Rooms, Training Room, Call Centre, Server Room, Conference Rooms etc., Air - Conditioned Toilets & Pantry: Ventilated 09 Jan 2012

    3. Automobile Showrooms & Workshops Area Segregation Workshops: Service Reception: Air-Conditioned Workshop: Ventilated Other Areas: Customer Lounges, Cafeteria, Managers Rooms, Support Staff Areas, Meeting Rooms, Conference Rooms, Air Conditioned Workers Training Room: Ventilated or Air-Conditioned Toilets & Pantry: Ventilated Materials/ Spares Warehouse : Ventilated Service Back Office: Ventilated 09 Jan 2012

    4. Air-Conditioning How to Increase Revenues? Air Conditioning: Large electricity consuming service Reduce electricity consumption by reducing capacity of required air-conditioning plant capacity May require additional capital cost in civil works. But less capital cost of air-conditioning plant & savings in running cost. Balanced approach required. Each factor shall be analyzed for extra capital cost vs. savings on running cost 09 Jan 2012

    5. Air-Conditioning Factors affecting the Capacity Required Air Conditioning: Outdoor Design Conditions Not in our control Building Orientation Indoor Design Temperature External Glass & Skylights External Walls Exposed Roof Internal Walls, Ceilings & Floors Occupancy Not in our control - defined by the usage Lighting Equipment inside Fresh Air 09 Jan 2012

    6. Air-Conditioning Factors affecting the Capacity Required Building Orientation: North South Orientation (Longer side of the building faces North & South) is better than East West orientation North Glass Low Heat Input & High Visual Light Transmission East West Orientation: Use minimum glass on west, Try to locate non air-conditioned areas towards west 09 Jan 2012

    7. Air-Conditioning Factors affecting the Capacity Required Indoor Design Temperature: Carefully select indoor design temperature. 1 Deg. C higher design temperature may result in AC plant load reduction of 1 to 4%. Areas with fluctuating occupancy such as Showroom, Conference Room, Training Room: Select indoor design temperature 1 to 2 Deg. C higher with peak occupancy 09 Jan 2012

    8. Air-Conditioning Factors affecting the Capacity Required External Glass & Skylight: Use recommendations of ECBC (Energy Conservation Building Code) External Glass Window to Wall Ratio: Maximum 60%, Skylight to Gross Roof Area Ratio: Maximum 5% Depending on WWR/SRR, ECBC recommends maximum Solar Heat Gain Factor (SHGF)& maximum Heat Transfer Coefficient (U) for External Glass Example: For a composite climate city, with WWR <=40%, maximum SHGF = 0.25 & maximum U = 0.58 BTU/hr Sqft F (3.30 W/Sqm K) Use Overhangs & Side Fins for Shading Accurately calculate the reduction on this account 09 Jan 2012

    9. Air-Conditioning Factors affecting the Capacity Required External Glass & Skylight: Use rated products of renowned manufacturers for accurate estimation of cooling / heating loads Use High Performance Glass Example: Comparisons with Single Plain Glass Saint Gobain: EVO Star; Single Glass Unit, High Performance Glass Savings in AC Load - North Glass: 50.00%, South Glass: 47.00%, East Glass: 47.00%, West Glass: 66.00% Saint Gobain: Twilight Blue; Double Glass Unit; Nano; Model KT740 savings in AC Load - North Glass: 72.00%, South Glass: 72.00%, East Glass: 72.00%, West Glass: 75.00% 09 Jan 2012

    10. Air-Conditioning Factors affecting the Capacity Required External Walls: 230 mm Brick Walls being used as standard 200 mm thick AAC Blocks equivalent to an insulated wall, AC Load reduction 60% Exposed Roof: Insulation with 75 mm thick Extruded Polystyrene / Equal Insulation AC Load reduction 70% compared to uninsulated roof 09 Jan 2012

    11. Air-Conditioning Factors affecting the Capacity Required Internal Walls, Ceiling & Floor: Insulation / Alternate Materials not practical and / or economically viable. Try to cluster the air-conditioned areas together 09 Jan 2012

    12. Air-Conditioning Factors affecting the Capacity Required Lighting: Use energy efficient CFL / LED Lights ECBC recommends maximum Lighting Power Density for various applications: Automotive Facility: 9.70 W/Sqm Office: 10.8 W/Sqm (IGBC: 7.5 W/Sqm) Workshops: 15.1 W/Sqm Use Day Lighting of Glass to reduce the Lighting Load 09 Jan 2012

    13. Air-Conditioning Factors affecting the Capacity Required Equipment Inside: Use energy efficient equipment / computers direct savings in electricity consumption, as well as reduction in AC load Fresh Air: Use latest standards for estimating the requirements of fresh air Use energy efficient methods to treat the fresh air before induction viz. Heat recovery wheels, Heat Pipes etc. 09 Jan 2012

    14. Air-Conditioning System Selection 09 Jan 2012

    15. Air-Conditioning System Selection Air Cooled Systems: Window ACs Split ACs Ducted Split ACs Package AC Units VRV / VRF System Air Cooled Chillers Water Cooled Systems: Package AC Units VRV / VRF System Water Cooled Chillers Water Cooled Systems are more energy efficient than Air Cooled Systems but require soft water, space & competent staff. 09 Jan 2012

    16. Air-Conditioning System Selection Each system has advantages & disadvantages Give due consideration to the energy costs of the system in addition to capital cost. ECBC recommends maximum power consumption for each type of system. Ensure compliance. Balanced approach required. 09 Jan 2012

    17. Air-Conditioning & Ventilation Other Measures Wherever Practical & Applicable, Use: Variable Frequency Drives on Air Handling Equipment Variable Frequency Drives on Pumping Systems Variable Frequency Drives on Cooling Tower Fans Heat Recovery Units on Fresh Air Inducing Equipment Seal Building Envelops to reduce leakages Use Air Curtains on Doors Get the Air & Water Systems Balanced by the Contractors Use Energy efficient EEF 1 Class Motors Use Power Factor Correction Capacitors to improve on the Power Factor 09 Jan 2012
