  2. What is Poverty? • Living below the poverty line. • An income enough to provide a family with an adequate standard of living • Child Poverty: Children that lives in families that live below the poverty line.

  3. Number of Children in Poverty • Children make up 28.9 million of US population (9.9%) • 13 million children are in poverty • One in five children (and one in five preschoolers) are poor

  4. Regional child Poverty Rates

Consequences of child poverty • Consequences of poverty for some children may be deadly. • 10,000 children die of poverty in the United States each year • Poverty reduces a person’s prospects of long life by increasing the chances of: • Infant death • Chronic disease • Traumatic death • Growth retardation affects 16% of poor children younger than 6 yrs • Poor children experience more sickness from infection than total population.

Effects on School Children • Poor children are less likely to perform well in school • They have below-average basic academic skills, more likely to fall behind in school • More likely to repeat grades • Drop out of school • Poor girls in school are 5x more likely to have children in their teenage years. • Poor children concentrate less in class and have higher rate of school absenteeism.

Child poverty Among Races • • Poverty rate for African Americans: 26.1 percent • Poverty rate for Asians and Pacific Islanders: 12.5 percent • Poverty rate for Hispanics of any race: 25.6 percent • Poverty rate for non-Hispanic whites: 8.2 percent. • Hispanics and African Americans have an higher percent of children in Poverty than other races.

  8. USA Compare to It’s Allies • The USAhas the highest infant mortality rate compare to developed countries (19th in the world) • America is 28th in avoiding low-birthweight babies • US students fare poorly on test compared with students in other countries

  9. Child Poverty in Rural and Urban Areas • One in five children in rural areas live in poverty • There are more poor children in rural areas than urban areas • 21% in rural areas compared to 16% in urban areas.

  10. Remedies to Eradicate Child poverty • The Government should Create Policies that increase the Minimum Wage • An increase minimum wage will bring more money into homes • Reduce unemployment • Child Support Insurance • The government should ensure that children living with one parent should get support from absent parent. • Parents should balance work and family • The government should ensure education and training opportunities for needed job skills
