Introduction • Germany as being the leading economy in Europe, both in terms of GDP and population • The Stuttgart Region is one of the driving forces in Germany and in Baden-Württemberg, it accounts for 30% of GDP, 25 % of the population, while only 10% of the territory • Other advantages: • Our companies are highly successful beyond Germany‘s borders • The Region encompasses the most important growth enterprises of the future • Logistics Goods mobility for efficient division of labor in the enterprises, and for Import / Export • The most appropriate formula for the explanation of the term logistics is:“the right merchandise at the right time on the right place”

  3. Contents • Significance of the logistics sector • Germany as a logistics location • The Stuttgart Region • Description of the existing logistics locations • Initiatives of the Stuttgart Region • Conclusion

  4. Significance of the logistics sector • In Germany, 2.7 million people (around 8% of the total working population) work in this sector  a figure unmatched by any other sector • Annual business turnover: 70 € billion • Around 15 € billion are invested each year in logistics real estate, technologies, and qualification measures • Germany holds 28%of the Europeanlogistics market, and enjoys an excellent international reputation (innovations, creativity, know-how...) • Includes around 60,000 enterprises • Represents 7,2% of Germany’s GDP • The sector grows faster than the economy  1% of economic growth means 3% of increase in goods traffic

  5. Germany as a logistics location • Germany as a significant and accurate location for logistics has leapt in the recent years, due to: • Its central geographical position in Europe • Its modern transport infrastructure • Its highly-qualified labor forces

  6. Germany at the very core of Europe

  7. Germany’s transport infrastructure • Germany’s motorways, railways and interior waterways cover a length of almost 60,000 kilometers • 12,000 kilometers of motorways (the biggest motorway network in the EU) • 70 % of goods are shipped on motorways • 36,000 kilometers of railways (the longest network in the EU) • 60 airports, 17 of which are international

  9. Regional centers of gravity in the logistics sector Stuttgart Region Source: prognos

  10. The Stuttgart Region • 2.7 billion of inhabitants, from 169 countries • Best high-tech region in Europe • Possesses a great number of industry-related research facilities • Records for the highest rate of industry-funded Research & Development, as well as for the biggest patent applications in Germany • Accounts for the highest export quota in Europe • Stuttgart Region : Capital City of Stuttgart + 5 counties (Böblingen / Esslingen / Göppingen / Ludwigsburg / Rems-Murr-Kreis)

  11. The Stuttgart Region on the move • Marshalling yard for freight trains • Inter-modal terminals connecting rails, roads, and waterways • At the junction of: • BAB 8 Karlsruhe / Munich • BAB 81 Singen / Heilbronn • Airport near the new fair • Train station connected to Europe – in 3.5 hours in Paris • Stuttgart 21 • Suburban railway network / subway lines / bus lines

  12. Transport infrastructure in the Stuttgart Region

  13. The Stuttgart Region – Strengths and Weaknesses • Strengths: • In the Region, there is a series of logistics-oriented actors: all national and international most considerable enterprises are represented • A very well-developed freight infrastructure, in particular the road network • Economic boom in the recent years  Increase of traffic for the combined transport • Weaknesses: • Few available spaces: the port of Stuttgart and the freight depot of Kornwestheim only as existing structures assured of a good future • High rent prices: Average rent prices for enterprises in the Stuttgart Region

  14. Existing logistics locations in the Stuttgart Region • GVZ – Güterverkehrszentrum Kornwestheim • DUSS – Terminal Kornwestheim • Port of Stuttgart • Port of Plochingen • Stuttgart Airport

  15. GVZ (Güterverkehrszentren) – Cargo Transport Centers • GVZ are “freight villages“, developed by governmental agencies in collaboration with the logistics industry (total of 33 GVZs in Germany) • They are freight support means and regional nodes • Services: customs clearance, security and vehicle maintenance… • GVZ Kornwestheim: Project coordinated by KLOK • Objective: Goods mobility and inter-modality in the urban center of the Stuttgart Region through the development of the area around the combination traffic terminal and the marshalling yard in Kornwestheim for a cargo transport center • Expected effects: total of 1,800 full-time employees + railway connection of properties

  16. Cargo Transport Center in Kornwestheim • Planned net effective area offer: 50 ha (considered as being the minimum for a cargo transport center) • After stage of expansion III, holds itself with 15.9 ha beyond limits • 36% of green areas scheduled, among which so as to ensure fresh air supply for Kornwestheim
