  2. 2018 Flood Event • July 1, 2018 – Heavy rains and flash flooding affected customers in Des Moines, Iowa and surrounding communities • The worst flooding occurred along Fourmile Creek in Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek in the Des Moines metro area • Additionally, basement flooding caused scattered outages

  3. 2018 Flood Event • A total of 306 gas customer outages resulted • 132 outages at the Pleasant Valley Mobile Home Park in Pleasant Hill • 174 other outages at various locations throughout the greater Des Moines area • Customers were restored throughout July 2018, following city inspections of customer equipment

  4. 2018 Tornado Event July 19, 2018 – A tornado impacted customers in Bondurant, Iowa A total of 19 gas customer outages resulted due to damaged structures Gas distribution system was not damaged and remained in normal operation Customers were restored after structures and customer equipment were inspected and deemed safe

  5. 2018 Tornado Event The same storm cell produced a separate tornado that damaged parts of Marshalltown, Iowa July 23-24, 2018 – MidAmerican provided 18 mutual assistance resources to Alliant Energy to assist with restoration efforts

Cedar Rapids Service Center Evacuation In late September 2016, the Cedar River experienced significant flooding in Iowa MidAmerican’s Cedar Rapids service center was evacuated and relocated to a temporary facility Extensive relocation of materials, equipment, records, etc. Fortunately, the service center was not impacted by flood waters

Lessons Learned - Communication • Communication with city officials • Emergency Management/Incident Command involvement • Coordinate efforts with local fire departments and National Guard • Align with mandatory evacuation areas established by the city • Ensure restoration protocols are in place • MidAmerican uses an online system to aid in inspections received by city officials • Communication with regulatory agencies • Communication with customers • Notifications for service status, restoration timeline and inspection requirements

  8. Lessons Learned - Preparedness • Tornadoes and flash floods do not provide advanced warning • Ensure materials such as valve locks, door tags and hip waders are in stock and ready for use • Practice procedures and field response using simulated emergency events • MidAmerican has developed an online portal of information based on previous flood and tornado events • MidAmerican uses an internal computer system to help identify affected customers/meters. This system is critical for deploying field resources quickly

Lessons Learned – Mutual Assistance • American Gas Association (AGA) • AGA is a great resource and helps coordinate requests for mutual assistance • MidAmerican partners with AGA, as well as with other AGA members, using the established mutual assistance process • https://www.aga.org/ for additional information
