  5. Where? The battle was waged in Ypres, Belgium, for control of the small town of Passchendaele. It started on the 31st of July and did not cease until mid-October. Conditions during the battle were very undesirable, the layout of the land in good weather already resembled a marshy, but when it rained it created an environment that is now associated with the misery of battle. A downpour could last for days, and with the British artillery blasting apart the surface of the ground, it would create large pools of impassable muck. Tanks at most times were unable to operate due to the Thick, slippery mud. Many soldiers were lost in the pools never to be found again. With the bad weather also came a low morale from the soldiers, this was a battlefield that few would refer to as glorious.
