  2. Identify the parts of paragraph On your handout, mark the parts of a paragraph: • Topic sentence • Transition • Supporting reason • Evidence

  3. Topic Sentence • Each paragraph must develop a single idea. • This idea is the topic sentence. • Often this sentence is placed at or near a paragraph’s start.

  4. Support • To develop a topic sentence, writers provide supporting reasons. • Depending on your subject matter, you may be able to provide two, three or more supporting reasons.

  5. Evidence • A well-written paragraph further develops the topic by providing evidence for the supporting ideas. • As in a trial, evidence strengthens a point. • Evidence may • Be in the form of a quotation from an appropriate source or • Be your own logical thinking

  6. Transitions • Coherence in a paragraph and in longer pieces of writing is enhanced by transitions. • Transitions help the reader smoothly move from one idea to another. • Transitions may be single words (however, similarly, also) or phrases (in contrast, most importantly).

  7. Concluding statement • Again, just as in a trial, the concluding statement sums up the paragraph’s focus. • Good writers always want to finish with a bang, not a whimper, so strive to use the clearest, most powerful language in the final sentence.
