  9. Universal Room Lesley-Anne Harris Asmita Karandikar Wassa Panont

  10. The Difference • Acuity Adaptable vs. Universal Patient Rooms • Acuity Adaptable: can adjust for current patient’s state • Universal Rooms: can adjust for the entire hospitals need

  11. Issues • “In the health-care field, change comes quickly as medical technology advances and care-giving methods evolve.” • Michelle Moore, 2004 • Flexible design is necessary since the need might not be met until 6 months later.

  12. Problems with the Current Rooms

  13. Trends in Patient Rooms • Strong presence of emerging technologies allow for increased flexible design • Movable fixtures (Beds, Couches, Workstations) • Mobile care stations • Adjustable lighting systems • Increased offerings of flexible infrastructure • Etc.

  14. Benefits to Universal Rooms

  15. Good Design • Room’s dimensions must be larger • Same configuration for all patients • i.e. Telemetry on right hand side for all patients • Must be adaptable for new demands • Change in acuity • Change in number of patients • Change in purpose of room
