  1. Cemetery Project Classification by Birth Years By:Yosuke KawaiHonors 291S

  2. Purpose and Hypothesis • Purpose-To examine possible trends and patterns of birth years of the individuals of the cemetery • Hypothesis-Null Hypothesis: There will be no significant trend or pattern in the plot layout.-Alternative Hypothesis: There will be a significant trend or pattern in the plot layout.

  3. 1856~1865 1866~1875 1876~1885 1886~1895 1896~1905 1906~1915 1916~1925 1925 and later Figure 1. The cemetery plots of the Moiliili Japanese Cemetery classified by birth years.

  4. Important Notes • Most gravestones had more than one name (and date) written; the earliest birth date was used • Blank refers to stones with no birth dates • Even if the day of death and age of death was given, it was omitted

  5. Couple of Other Notes • The earliest birth year is 1856; Takahashi, Yoshi (9/1/1856). • The latest birth year is 1950; Yano, Patrick Katsumi (11/8/1950).

  6. Conclusion • The birth year of an individual does not really provide useful information as a death year would • In fact, the relative age of the individual may have been more useful • Project may contain error due to incompleteness of the excel sheet; and also due to time (will revise)
