  6. What We Don’t Know Hispanic Achievement Gap Researchers and educators do not have consensus on causes. Factors include: • Socioeconomic status • Biological differences • Genetic variations in IQ levels • Cultural differences and biases • Learning environments

  7. What We Don’t Know Hispanic Achievement Gap Researchers and educators do not have consensus on causes. Legislation and initiatives include: • No Child Left Behind Act • National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) • Education Trust • Democrats for Educational Reform • The Education Equality Project • The Achievement Gap Initiative at Harvard University • “Dispelling the Myth” schools (high-poverty, high-minority, high-performing schools)

What We Do Know Hispanic Achievement Gap • The nation’s demographics are rapidly changing • The U.S. ranks below other nations in its ability to compete in the global economy • Significant gaps for Hispanic students are evident in every measure of achievement • Narrowing the achievement gap will have a positive economic and social impact.

  10. Mission: Leverage all available resources to significantly increase Hispanic student achievement Approach: Establish the National Center for Hispanic Achievement

National Center for Hispanic Achievement Goals: • Capitalize on current resources to expand LSCS’s capacity to lead and support Hispanic student achievement • Develop specific partnerships with K-12, universities, businesses, and others to increase access for Hispanic students • Provide a voice in Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and Texas Legislature in support of increasing Hispanic student achievement • Establish LSCS as an innovator and national leader in Hispanic student achievement • Facilitate awareness, networking, best practices exchange and innovation.
