Two Forms of Social Conformity • Normative – The need to be liked and accepted by others LECTURE EXPERIMENT • 50 people at a lecture on technology • 2 people in the front row were part of the test • 1st half of lecture – excellent and logical • 2nd half – Jibberish • At conclusion – 2 plants begin clapping enthusiastically for 10 seconds. • Then they stand up and clap loudly and enthusiastically WHAT DID EVERYONE ELSE DO? All but one person stood up and clapped and smiled and participated in the standing ovation!

Two Forms of Social Conformity • Informational – The need to be correct SOLOMON ASCH EXPERIMENT (1951) • 5 People – 4 Test Plants • Each given two cards • Asked to select which line on Card 2 matched theline on Card 1 • 4 tests plants answer first and all give the same obviously WRONG answer WHAT DID THE TEST SUBJECT DO? 25% of the time they changed their answer to match the answer of the first 4 people.
