  2. “Average” Village • Average is a community of 100,000 people in Australia – it could be anywhere in the State and will be used for illustrative purposes. • Based on the Normaltown concept – by John Best, NSW Health.

Average Village • Average village has an Early Years Action Group community meeting to discuss their poor AEDI results and decide to focus on three issues that they feel may be impacting on the child developmental levels in their community. • Child development predictors: • Low Birth Weight • Breastfeeding • Parenting Skills • Come up with something

  4. Need a plan – where to start? • Multiple levels (individual, family, workplace, community, state and federal). • Multiple data sources. • Multiple strategies and ideas.

  5. Multiple levels – Intervention design! • Intrapersonal (motivational, skill building) • Interpersonal (social norms and networks) • Organisational (health care, workplaces, schools) • Community (resources, Broken Windows) • Policy (local, state and federal laws)

  6. Multiple Data sources • Demographic / Social - Australian Bureau of Statistics. • International - WHO, Unicef, World Bank. • National - ABS, AIHW, Health and Aged Care, National Research Institutions. • State - Health Information Centre (DoH), Health Insurance Council, Other Govt. and NGOs. • Local Surveys and ad hoc data – AEDI, speech pathologist tracked clients, child care centre surveyed parents.
