Objectives/goals • Content: I will be able to persuade/support why I feel I am ready to move on to high school in a cover letter. • Language: I will use the language of “SUPPORT” & TRANSTION WORDS to write with in my cover letter and discuss with my TPS partner. • Social: I will respectfully collaborate with my group in the computer lab.

  3. What the “heck” is a Cover Letter? • -What words does it have in the title? • -Exactly!!!!  • -COVER • -LETTER

  4. What the “heck” is a Cover Letter? • -Cover Letter is the FIRST thing that “covers” who you are and why you are passionate about exiting 8th grade and into high school/(job). • -It is the very first thing that you have to send to the workplace to even apply. • -Usually it is accompanied with your resume and is on top of your resume when you send it to the place you would like to work at. • -PASSION and UNIQUENESS MUST be present in this letter!!! • -You must stand out! • -Sometimes employees won’t even look at the rest of your application if your cover letter sounds “boring” to them. • -I would like to share mine with you!  Listen to mine. While you listen, write down some “power words” or “power ideas” that come to mind and that has me stand out in it.

Formatting Paper • Single space!!!! • 12 point font • Times New Roman • One space after periods • Margins: 1 inch on each side • DO NOT Indent!!!!!!!!!!!! the first sentence of your paragraphs (EVERYTHING IS TOWARD THE MARGINS!) • Like your resume, make sure it fits on one page. • Title of the paper is “Stacey Middle School” top line, second line” 8th Grade Interview and Portfolio Project” • Space and then center the title,“Cover Letter” • Date goes to the margin as well. You can write today’s date. • Salutation is “Dear Reader” (write this toward margin)

  8. Throughout your paper, use transition words as glue! : • Explain to your reader/interviewer what you did your in project in detail. Use the FOURtransition words below to organize your sentence structure: DO NOT FORGET COMMAS AFTER YOUR TRANSITION STATEMENTS or WORDS (ex. At first, I had to pre-cut …..) Transition Words to choose from: -at the beginning, immediately, first, before, -secondly, also, and, and then, another, besides, but also, equally important, furthermore, further, in addition, in fact, likewise, moreover, next, nor, plus the fact that, then too, thirdly, too, after a few days, afterward, between, in the meantime, later, meanwhile, not long after, soon, then, while, about, at the same time, during, often, until, the following night -finally, last, lastly, at last, at length, eventually, thereafter, as a result, consequently, therefore, thus

  9. Introductory Paragraph • Start your introductory paragraph with telling us who you are: • -Introduce yourself to your reader. Tell a little about who you are as a person and as a student. (CREATE A HOOK OR ANALOGY HERE!) • -Start with a HOOK/quote and then explain it. • -What is important to you as a person? • -How are you as a person? • -What is important to you as a student? • -How are you as a student?

  10. Second Paragraph: • -Do you have hopes and aspirations for the future that would help your reader get to know you? • -Discuss your possible interests here or possible career here. Tell me why this is important to you. (Big Idea) • -What do you think your purpose is to do in your life? • -Do you want to work with children? Do you want to be a good citizen and father/mother someday? • -Do you know what college you want to go to? Do you want to go to college?

Third Paragraph • --Reflect on what you have learned in your years at Stacey Middle School. • -What were some of your weakness (but always give me a positive to counteract this) • -What were some lessons you learned in academics? What was your favorite class? • -What were some lessons you learned about yourself? Did you improve any skills? Were there any concepts that really sparked you? • -What were some lessons you learned about your friends or family? • -What did you learn about yourself? What was the Big Idea/theme you learned about yourself? • -Focus particularly on what you have learned in the 8th grade.

Fourth Paragraph • -Now that you have finished your portfolio, give a reflective analysis. • -Add anything you would like that shows your ability to analyze yourself as a reader and a writer. • -comment on some specific well done examples that you want the reader to notice. • -Explain why you think that these are good examples of the California State Content Standards. This refers to any pieces in the portfolio. • -What was the most important piece in your portfolio that you were most proud of and why?
