  4. Exemplary University Classroom Experiences “Faculty members have the responsibility to make [teacher candidates] aware of and to provide teaching strategies for maximizing student learning in the multitude of various classroom environments.” Policy and Procedures Manual(OSRHE,2012)

Exemplary University Classroom Experiences Examples of Classroom Experiences: • Desired teaching behaviors that are modeled by SWOSU’s professional faculty • Designing lesson and unit plans • Engagement with guest speakers. • Theoretical knowledge via coursework, texts, discussions, and multi-media presentations

Best Practice Field Experiences “The unit and its school partners design, implement, and evaluate field experiences…so that teacher candidates…develop and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions necessary to help all students learn.” Professional Standards for the Accreditation of Teacher Preparation Institutions (NCATE, 2008)

  7. Best Practice Field Experiences Examples of Field Experiences: • 30 hour observation field experience in Foundations of Education course • Practicums in Methods courses • Diversity field trips in Principles of Teaching and Contemporary Issues courses • 12 week Student Teaching experience

  8. Teacher Education Cohort Experiences “Teachers are members of learning communities…They work with other professionals on instructional policy, curriculum development and staff development.” The Five Core Propositions (NBPTS, 1997)

  9. Teacher Education Cohort Experiences Examples of Cohort Experiences: • Collaborative classroom exercises • Peer presentations and reviews • Classroom discussions • Electronic discussion posts on D2L, blogs, and Wikis

Education-Related Service Learning Experiences Service learning incorporates these four elements: • An identified community need • Students able to meet that need through service • A course objective being met in the performance of the service • A formal reflective activity following the service Service Learning at SWOSU (SWOSU, 2012)
