  1. PASS LEVEL - MANDATORY TASK First Class Cadet BASIC PRINCIPLES OF AIRMANSHIP AIRFIELDS Learning Outcome 1: Know the features of an airfield

  2. Objectives Understand Airfield Layouts Know how runways are numbered Know how runways & taxiways are marked – by day and night Know how approach lights guide an aircraft into land

  3. Types of Airfield Grass Triangle Pattern Main Instrument Runway

  4. Wind Speed 20 Knots Airspeed 80 Knots Ground Speed = 60 Knots

  5. PASS LEVEL - MANDATORY QUESTION Basic Grass Airfield

  6. PASS LEVEL - MANDATORY QUESTION MAIN USE: For light aircraft. ADVANTAGES: Offers a variable take off direction, making it easier to take off into the wind. DISADVANTAGES: Rough uneven terrain. Effect of cross winds - can be unusable in bad weather. Maintenance difficulties.

  7. PASS LEVEL - MANDATORY QUESTION Triangle Pattern Airfield

  8. PASS LEVEL - MANDATORY QUESTION MAIN USE: For heavier and faster aircraft that need hard runways Heavier aircraft require more lift to take off and longer runways. ADVANTAGES: The triangular pattern provides greater runway length, a choice of take-off or landing direction and avoids cross-wind issues. DISADVANTAGES: Some are no longer used. Dependent upon the wind direction.

  9. Modern Main Instrument Runway PASS LEVEL - MANDATORY QUESTION

  10. PASS LEVEL - MANDATORY QUESTION MAIN USE: For aircraft that are heavier and require faster take off speeds Has one long runway. Used by major airports and may have multiple runways so that airliners can take off and land simultaneously on adjacent different runways. ADVANTAGES: Length of runway suitable for modern high performance aircraft Has many landing aids. Faster approach speeds mean that cross wind has less effect. . DISADVANTAGES: Only for large or high performance aircraft and instrument landing.

  11. Major Airport

  12. Modern Main Instrument Runway

  13. PASS LEVEL - MANDATORY QUESTION Identify the main features of an airfield and their function.
