  2. On page 104 of your notebook, Go through this paragraph and fix the mistakes (grammar, punctuation, misspellings) You may have to add something or take something away. There are 12 mistakes. This weekend was very busy four me. As soon as I left school I had to report to my other job and I didn’t get off until 9:30pm. By the time I got home, I was exhausted. Their was still work to be done, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it that night so I left the ungraded folders in my car. The next morning, Saturday, I was up pretty early so I thought I’d get a jump on cleaning up my untamed house. The kitchen needed tending: dishes needed to be washed, the floor needed to be swept, counter tops needed to be wiped. All of this was left on my shouders. Finally after about two hours, I finished the kitchen. Unfortunately, my room was still a tragedy. I had clothes that needed to be washed, my floor needed to be vacuumed, my bed made (which I rarely do), and my bathroom needed to be cleaned. All of this had to be done before 1:30pm, when I knew I had to leave for work. Needless to say, I was late for work because my time management skills really need some help and I didn’t finish all my tasks until about 1:50pm (I had to be to work at 2pm. That night, I didn’t leave work until 8pm and again, i was exhausted. Yet and still, there was work to be done. So I brought the ungraded papers inside, but only for them to remained untouched and ungraded for the remainder of the weekend. Suffice it to say, in case you didn’t pick up on this already, you’re Outsiders’ folders have not been graded. And the moral of this story is: don’t procrastinate like Ms. Pratt or you will end up with unfinished work and a shorter amount of time to have it completed. Warm-up 2/24/2014

  4. On page 110 of your notebook • Read the US Censorship Test on page 10-11 then complete the following steps • Answer the 10 citizenship questions on pages 10-11 with your group. You don’t have to write the question. • Once you’ve done that, use the IPad to visit this website(type EXACTLY how it looks): dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/ois_natz_fr_2012.pdf Now, read through the three pages and look over the charts so you will be able to answer the following questions: • In which countries were most of the naturalized citizens born? • Where in the US do they mostly live? • What naturalization trends do you notice over the last few years? • Then in a paragraph, summarize all of this information in a paragraph Warm-up 3/3/2014

Based on the article you read in your JR Scholastic on pages 10-11, then answer the following question in a PARAGRAPH (5-7 SENTENCES) after you read: Pg 112 in your notebook: The 14th Amendment to the constitution grants American citizenship to anyone born in the U.S. It was adopted in 1868 in the aftermath of the Civil War to ensure that the children born to former slaves would be American citizens. Some lawmakers-including U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina-are calling for an end to birthright citizenship, saying that it encourages illegal immigration. They say that people born in the U.S. should be considered U.S. citizens only if at least one of their parents is a legal resident. What do you think? Should people born in the U.S. automatically be granted citizenship or should citizenship be something that is passed down based on the generation prior? Warm-up 3/6/2014

  6. On page 114 of your notebook, copy down the following: Idioms= These are expressions that are not to be taken literally. When people use an idiomatic expression, it is to express a figurative meaning (means something else). For example, “break a leg” is a common idiom. Literal meaning: I command you to break a bone in your leg and you should probably go to the doctor afterwards to get it fixed. Figurative/Idiomatic meaning: Do your best and do well. Often, actors tell each other to “break a leg” before they go out on stage to perform. Come up with 1 idiom Then explain its literal meaning Then explain its figurative/idiomatic meaning.
