Ice Breaker Activity • This is a do-it-yourself ice-breaker. • We want you to meet and interact with as many other people as possible. • You have approximately 7 minutes from the time the first whistle is blown to mingle and chat with the other participants. • Until the second whistle is blown, you are on your own. • In 7 minutes we will conduct a contest-you will have 2 chances to win!

  3. Most Popular • Raise your hand if you believe your full name will be remembered by the most people in the room.

  4. Memory • Look around the room and estimate how many people’s full names you can remember. • Give us a bid-for example," I can name 5 people correctly.”

  5. Discussion • How did it feel not having more explicit direction on how to get to know each other? • What was beneficial about not having those explicit instructions?

  6. A quote to consider… “As soon as you tell a child how to solve a problem, you have lost the ability to see how the child thinks”

What is the Common Core State Standards Initiative? • a state-led effort to establish a shared set of clear educational standards for ELA and math • states can voluntarily adopt. • informed by highest state standards across the country and globe • designed by a diverse group of teachers, experts, parents, and school administrators • reflect both our aspirations for our children & realities of the classroom.

Why Adopt Common Core? • designed to ensure that students are prepared to go to college or enter the workforce • that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of what is expected of them. • are benchmarked to international standards to guarantee that our students are competitive in the emerging global marketplace.

How will this affect me? • Increased focus on Informational Text • Increased focus on discovery/personalized learning • New standards: Common Core for Math and English/LA • New NC Essential Standards for everybody else by ‘12-13. • We will be exploring these next year in our ERD sessions. • New assessments: More to come, but as of now… new assessments to come in 2012-13.

  11. How does this apply to ME? In support of the state and district initiative of Common Core, we ALL need to prepare students to be college and career ready, literate individuals.

A Glimpse of a College, Career-Ready, Literate Student • They demonstrate independence • They build strong content knowledge • They respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline • They comprehend as well as critique • They value evidence • They use technology and digital media strategically and capably • They come to understand other perspectives and cultures

  13. 7 College & Career Ready Capacities Activity: Look at your handout and record how the 7 capacities could look for your students: • In your classroom • In college or in the workplace

  14. How do WE do this? For students to become proficient in the 7 Capacities of College and Career readiness, we will be incorporating 20 anchor standards of the common core into our current curriculums.  • 10 standards= reading informational text • 10 standards= writing

  15. Reading Informational Texts A large part of the initiative is to incorporate informational text reading strategies. We want to ensure that students are using the correct strategies to read these texts.

  16. Informational Text Activity • Each person will get a copy of informational text to read. Your table group will have the same text as you.

  17. Informational Text Activity • Write a summary of what you have just read.

Informational Text Activity • Discuss the article within your table groups. • What did you find challenging about reading this article? • What was the article about? • Choose a person from your table to share what the reading was about and what you found difficult about reading this type of article.

  19. Anchor Standards for Reading • Read through the 10 READING anchor standards. • Put a √by the anchor standards that you used in your reading process. • How many standards did you use? Share with your table.

  20. 4 square activity • Now, discuss within your groups what some challenges may be, for both you and your students, as you integrate more informational text into your teaching. • What are some possible solutions to those challenges?

  21. Anchor Standards for WRITING • Read through the 10 writing standards • Create a lesson/activity that includes as many of the standards as you can. This should be a lesson you could easily incorporate into your instruction. You can do this activity with your table or individually. • Selected groups will share activity/lesson with whole group.

  22. What can you do to SUPPORTthe Common Core Standards? • Be flexible and adaptable. • Focus on collaboration! We are a team!
