The fact that we need paternity testing shows how corrupt our society is. • I have never once doubted the paternity of my sons! • But, I know a guy who did! “When [Jesus’] mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly” (Mt 1:18-19, ESV).
Mary & Joseph were planning on getting married. • But, before they could get married, Mary was found with child. • At first, Joseph did not know that this Child was conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew provides the DNA line of Jesus all the way back to Abraham. • Because v 16 mentions the father of Joseph, this is certainly Joseph’s genealogy. • If Joseph adopted Jesus, Jesus would have Joseph’s genealogy. • Plus, those of royal descent had their genealogies kept in the temple.
This morning, we want to look at the genealogy of Jesus Christ. • We often skip over the genealogies in the Bible. • The names are hard to pronounce. • Our society doesn’t place nearly the emphasis on genealogies as did previous societies.

Matthew’s point: Just as the genealogy of Adam begins the history of man, the genealogy of Jesus begins a new chapter in human history.
“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned” (Mt 4:15-16, ESV).

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Lk 4:18-19, ESV).

We live in a new era! • Therefore, we can start anew: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away behold, the new has come” (2 Cor 5:17, ESV).
