  8. Journal Entry • Complacency is a desire to please and not stir up trouble even when harmful events are occurring. It is also an unwillingness to step outside of society’s lines of conduct despite the situation. • Why would a person be complacent even in times when they may be in danger? What pressures does society place upon people that cause them to be complacent; in other words, what negative consequences do those who speak up about their feelings face?

  9. Journal Entry • Complacency is a desire to please and not stir up trouble even when harmful events are occurring. It is also an unwillingness to step outside of society’s lines of conduct despite the situation. • Think about a time in your own life when you were complacent about something. 10. Journal Entry • Complacency is a desire to please and not stir up trouble even when harmful events are occurring. It is also an unwillingness to step outside of society’s lines of conduct despite the situation. • If people were less complacent and more willing to disagree and challenge situations they do not agree with, how might this positively affect our society and our world? X

  11. Journal Entry • Think back to when you were a small child – Did you think that the world was a relatively safe place?

  12. Journal Entry • Did your parents seem like super heroes who were never scared of anything and who would always keep you safe from harm? How has your worldview changed? What events in your life have caused this change?

  13. Journal Entry • As you have grown and discovered that the world was not the place you envisioned as a child, how have your feelings about the world changed? Were you disappointed? Or, did you adjust easily?

  14. Journal Entry • Was there one event that stands out in your mind as a time when you lost your innocence? Imagine you were in Eliezer’s position, going from the safety of childhood to the terrors of the Holocaust. What feelings would you experience?

  15. Journal Entry • Experiencing horrors and being exposed to the darkest side of humanity can cause people to lose hope and faith in themselves, the future, the goodness of humanity, and in God. In his memoir NightElie Wiesel recounts the terrifying nightmare which was his everyday reality. Throughout the book, Elie talks of his struggles to maintain his faith. Why do you think that Elie struggled with his faith?

  16. Journal Entry • If you were in Eliepostion, do you think that your faith would be challenged? Why or why not? Why is faith in yourself, the future, others, and a higher power/ God/ the order of the universe important? In other words, what purpose does faith serve in our lives?

  17. Journal Entry • Have you ever lost faith in something? Why? How did it make you feel?

  18. Journal Entry • Horrible circumstances, such as the ones that Elie Wiesel and the other Jews faced during the Holocaust, cause people to go into survival mode. When struggling to survive, people take desperate measures and act in ways that they normally may not. It can be difficult to balance one’s responsibility and love for their family with their instinct to survive. What does Elie do to survive?

  19. Journal Entry • Have you ever been in a situation where you had to act in survival mode? How did your instinct to survive change your normal behavior? If you have never been in a position where you were fighting for survival, try to put yourself into the shoes of the Jewish people. How do you think you would respond? What lengths would you go through to survive?
