  2. WELCOME! This presentation shows you how to use PantherSoft and Student Learner Services to view and/or print your IRS 1098-T Tuition Statement on-line

  3. Important Information • The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 allows taxpayers to claim educational credits for some higher education expenses • Each year, FIU prepares an IRS 1098-T Tuition Statement Form for each student who meets all of the following criteria: • FIU received payments of qualified tuition and related expenses from the student • Student is not a non-resident alien • Student is enrolled in classes for academic credit • Student’s tuition and expenses not entirely waived or paid with scholarship • Student’s tuition and expenses not covered by a third party payment arrangement • Beginning for Tax Year 2005, FIU provides these forms to students electronically on the PantherSoft Learner Services site • FIU no longer mails Form 1098-T to students on an annual basis FIU does not provide tax advice. If you have a question about claiming the educational credits, please consult a tax expert

  6. Click Accept to receive this and future 1098-T forms electronically Not Recommended! Contact the Student Financials Office

  7. If you Accept…this page displays with links to any years the 1098-T data is available in PantherSoft Select the year you want to review

  8. Click OK The first time you log on, a warning displays that you must have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat to view a replica of the actual 1098-T IRS Form

  9. Do I have to get Adobe Acrobat Reader? • No – the dollar amounts displayed in the Box are the same amounts as on the printed copy of the IRS Form • You only need Adobe Acrobat Reader if you want to print a replica of the form in the official IRS format

  10. If you don’t have the latest version, you get a blank page when you click Click for latest version

  11. You have options . . . • View the amounts for the 1098-T boxes • View the detail behind the boxes by clicking Box 1-5 Details • View or print a replica of the 1098-T form in the IRS format

Note: FIU uses Billed by Posted Date for qualified tuition and expenses Click View All, if highlighted to see all details The detail for Box 2 (Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses) The detail for Box 4 (Scholarships or Grants)

  14. Why is there a negative number in the Details for charges in this example? The Details show all eligible transactions resulting from enrollment activity Line 1 582.72 = student enrolled for 6 undergrad resident tuition credit hours 4/24/05 Line 2 -291.36 = student dropped 3 credit hours on 4/25/05 Net result 291.36 is included in Box 2 for Summer ’05 tuition

  15. View or Print a Replica of the IRS Form 1098-T . . . • If you have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, click • A replica of the form displays.
