  4. What is Chivalry? • It was the “knightly system” of the Middle Ages • Knights devoted themselves to their Earthly Lord, Heavenly Lord, and Chosen Lady • What class were knights from? • The Noble Class • Could a female become a knight? • Yes, but it was very rare

  5. What are the 3 stages of knighthood? • Page • At age 7 he would be sent off to the Lord’s castle • He played chess, learned horsemanship, archery, swordsmanship, and other castle duties • Squire • At age 14 he acted as a knight’s servant • Took care of the knight’s armor, weapons, and horse • Concentrated on strength, fitness & skill with weapons • Knight • Age 21 • Would go through a dubbing ceremony

Why were coats of arms used? • Because few knights could read • It was an official stamp or signature • What were tournaments? • Battles knights took part in to keep in good condition • What was jousting? • 2 knights on horses with lances & shields • What did knights get if they were the winner of a tournament/jousting match? • The losers horse and armor
