  1. Log Data Usability: The Service Company Perspective A Service Company Perspective One Guy’s Perspective

  2. Log Data Usability Problem What is the Problem? • “Complexity of data” • “Volume of data” • “Data is difficult to understand” • “Diverse data formats”

  3. Log Data Usability Problem What is Behind the Problem? • Higher Technology --> Greater Data Complexity • Service Differentiation is a Business Driver • Perception - broad audience of specialists and generalists (differences in scope, granularity of view) • Slow uptake of new representation technology by some clients (DLIS, nD Arrays...) • Perspective: Acquisition vs. Interpretation • Model Focus: Data --> Activity --> Real-World Objects • Control of “catalogs” is distributed across non-cooperating entities • Contractor data models differ from that of common data exchange model (DLIS) • Confusion between control at Class level vs. Instance level • Muddy organizational concepts: Service, Tool... • Need to support Legacy Data

  4. Log Data Usability Problem What can be done about the Problem? • Reinforce and promote DLIS as the primary exchange model, especially for data acquisition • Backup: Provide tools to produce derivative products from original DLIS • Other formats • Reduced data sets • Have centralized dictionary control • Organize and classify data to improve clarity and facilitate filtering • Improve documentation • Long-term: Adopt a standard exchange model whose semantics describe the data context more fully than DLIS.

  5. Classification of Products (Services, Tools...) Namespace (Contractor) Tool Model and Tool Type (DLIS: TOOL) Software Module (DLIS: PROCESS) Logging Method • Wireline • MWD • Production Discipline (see below) Logging Technology (see below)

  6. Classification of Services, Tools (cont.) Discipline • Completion • Drilling • General • Geological Modeling • Geology • Geophysics • Petrophysics • Production • Well Testing

  7. Logging Technology Acoustic Auxiliary Caliper Casing_Inspection Cement_Evaluation Collar_Locator Combination Dielectric Dipmeter Flowmeter Fluid_Density Geomagnetism Geometry Gravity MWD Mechanical Nuclear Nuclear_Magnetic Perforating Pressure Resistivity Sampling Scanning Special_Purpose Spontaneous_Potential Telemetry Temperature Testing Classification of Services, Tools (cont.)

  8. Classification of Data (Channels, Parameters...) Namespace (Contractor) Availability Property Type Unit Quantity Shape and Construct Associated Tools Associated Software Modules

  9. SLB Data Availability BASIC The "defining" data of a service, usually used "as is by a broad spectrum of professionals and softwareproducts, typically displayed on the standard optical product for the service. CUSTOMER Data which are intended for customer distribution to supplement and support the BASIC data, primarily for the use of domain specialists; typically includes minimum data that are required to derive the BASIC data using the original system or advanced software products (GeoFrame). PRODUCER Data intended for engineering purposes of the producer, usually confidential or transitory. Item may be written to exchange files, but distribution is restricted to Schlumberger use only. INTERNAL Item is for internal use; not written to exchange files but still may be archived and restored.

  10. SLB Property Types Generic Glossary Quality Descriptions Hierarchical Organization Unit-independent Representation-independent Currently 3085 Types In SLB Data Dictionary: • 30420/30420 Channels are mapped to 753 Property Types • 9762/19779 Parameters are mapped to 1608 Property Types
