  2. ARGO array could be the factory of the findings in oceanography. By quantity of floats and their permanent action its appearance could be compared with the appearance of the conveyor. Number of the findings depends of an area. The Japan Sea is most perspective area for the use of floats-profilers. Not only by unic waters (subarctic and subtropical waters meet each other in semi-closed basin). The use of floats allows to overcomethe fences of EEZ. Experiment of UW showed advantages of it.Questions: • What are the basic features of the NW Japan Sea oceanography ? • Is there connection between waters near Hokkaido and Primorye ?

  3. The Japan Sea water circulation between Hokkaido and Peter the Great bay, before UW experiment, is shown on this slide. As you can see, two basic currents in both surface and deep layers are divided by some cells. 0m/1000 m Yarichin, Pokudov,1982

  4. DATA First 4 profiling floats appeared in the Japan Sea before UW experiment and soon disappeared. 32 UW floats (800 m, 10 days) worked from August of 1999. Most of floats worked about 3 years. RESULTS Traditional (pre-UW experiment) understanding of the Japan Sea water circulation and its structure has to be changed. Two basic findings in the Japan Basin are: -large-scale gyre and -Eastern eddy. The belts of warm/saline water (along 42N) and Cold/fresh water (along North-west front) were traced also. Borders of the Gyre and the Eddy are shown at the figure.

  7. CTD data of floats show the belt of warm salt water at the northern side (42N) of the gyre and cold fresh water- south of it.

  8. In winter, the warm salty water is distributed to the west from Hokkaido and occupies the depths between 50 and 750 m. Cold water of low salinity appears in the upper 100 m layer near Tumannaya river estuary in a winter. And it is transported south-east from there along North-west front.

  10. In unusually cold winter of 2001, homogenity in salinity and density vertical distribution was observed by floats down to lower level of observation.

  11. The use of floats data only for calculation of seasonal currents is problematic now. For example, part of floats just after the deployment concentrated along North-west front and later- in eastern Japan basin.

  12. From 32 stations 9 were lost in first year, 7- at second and 8- at 3-rd.From 4 JAERI floats 2 stayed at the surface.

  13. CONCLUSIONS:- Gyre and East eddy are important features of the Japan Sea oceanography;- deep current exists between Hokkaido and Peter the Great bay.
