  1. Statue of Philippe Thomas, realised by André Vermare and inaugurated in Sfax in 1913. The statue was removed in 1957. Mining Philippe Thomas (1843-1910) discovered phosphate deposits at Gafsa in 1885-86. Phosphates production in Tunisia: 1910: 1,300,000 1913: 2,000,000 1930: 6,000,000 (1° world producer)
