  3. LESSON 1 • INDIVIDUALS CAN TAKE CHARGE OF THEIR PHYSICAL,MENTAL\EMOTIONAL, AND SOCIAL HEALTH BY MAKING HEALTHY CHOICES AND PRACTICING HEALTHY BEHAVIORS.

  7. TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH • YOU ARE RESPONSBILE FOR YOUR OWN HEALTH. • HEALTH-IS THE COMBINATION OF PHYSICAL,MENTAL/EMOTIONAL, AND SOCIAL WELL-BEING. • EVERYDAY YOU MAKE DECISIONS THAT SHAPE YOUR HEALTH.

  8. YOUR HEALTH TRIANGLE • IT IS IMPORTANT TO BALANCE YOUR PHYSICAL, MENTAL/EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL HEALTH. • PHYSICAL HEALTH-IS ALL ABOUT HOW WELL YOUR BODY FUNCTIONS.

FIVE IMPORTANT ACTIONS 1.GET 8-10 HOURS OF SLEEP EACH NIGHT. 2.Eat nutritious meals and drink 8 glasses of water each day. 3.Engage in 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity each day. 4.Avoid the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. 5. Bathe daily, and floss and brush your teeth every day.

  10. MENTAL/EMOTIONAL HEALTH • -IS ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS. • HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT YOURSELF,HOW YOU MEET THE DEMANDS OF DAILY LIFE,AND HOW YOU COPE WITH PROBLEMS THAT OCCUR IN YOUR LIFE. • SPIRITUAL HEALTH-A DEEP-SEATED SENSE OF MEANING AND PURPOSE IN LIFE.

  11. SOCIAL HEALTH • GETTING ALONG WITH OTHERS • IT IS AS IMPORTANT TO YOUR OVERALL HEALTH AND WELLNESS AS HAVING A FIT BODY AND MIND. • FAMILY, TEACHERS, AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY.

  12. KEEPING IN BALANCEWELLNESS • -AN OVERALL STATE OF WELL-BEING OF TOTAL HEALTH. • -IT COMES FROM MAKING DECISIONS AND PRACTICING BEHAVIORS THAT ARE BASED ON SOUND KNOWLEDGE AND HEALTHFUL ATTITUDES. • KEEPING A BALANCE AMONG THE 3 COMPONENTS OF HEALTH.

  13. THE HEALTH CONTINUUMHEALTHFUL BEHAVIORS WILL PROMOTE YOUR WELLESS • -THE CONTINUUM SPANS THE COMPLETE RANGE OF HEALTH, FROM THE LOSS OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS AT ONE END TO THE HIGH-LEVEL WELLNESS AT THE OTHER. • DRAW THE ILLNESS-WELLNESS CONTINUUM.

  14. CHRONIC DISEASE-AN ONGOING CONDITION OR ILLNESS SUCH AS HEART DISEASE,OBESITY, AND CANCER. • THE LEADING RISK FACTORS FOR MANY CHRONIC DISEASES ARE SMOKING,LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY,POOR NUTRITION,BEING OVERWEIGHT,AND LACK OF HEALTH SCREENINGS.

  16. INFLUENCES ON YOUR HEALTH • MAIN IDEA- HEREDITY,ENVIRONMENT,ATTITUDE,BEHAVIOR,MEDIA, AND TECHNOLOGY CAN ALL INFLUENCE YOUR HEALTH. • HEREDITY-REFERS TO ALL THE TRAITS THAT WERE BIOLOGICALLY PASSED ON TO YOU FROM YOUR PARENTS.

  17. ENVIRONMENT • -THE SUM OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS,INCLUDING THE PHYSICAL PLACES IN WHICH YOU LIVE AND THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE UP THE WORLD. • PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT • NEIGHBORHOOD • SCHOOL SAFETY • PARKS AND RECREATION • ACCESS TO MEDICAL CARE

  18. SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT • -IS MADE UP OF ALL THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU,INCLUDING YOUR FAMILY AND PEERS. • PEERS-PEOPLE OF THE SAME AGE WHO SHARE SIMILAR INTERESTS. • CULTURE-REFERS TO THE COLLECTIVE BELIEFS,CUSTOMS,AND BEHAVIORS OF A GROUP.

  19. ATTITUDE • YOUR ATTITUDE, OR THE WAY YOU VIEW SITUATIONS,CAN HAVE A BIG EFFECT ON YOUR HEALTH. • OPTIMISTS-PEOPLE WHO SEE THE GLASS AS HALF FULL. • PESSIMISTS-PEOPLE WHO SEE THE GLASS HALF EMPTY.

  20. MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY • MEDIA-ARE THE VARIOUS METHODS FOR COMMUNICATING INFORMATION. • TECHNOLOGY-SUCH AS RADIO,TV,AND THE INTERNET,NEWSPAPER,AND MAGAZINES.

ABSTAINING FROM HIGH RISK BEHAVIORS • ABSTINENCE-IS A DELIBERATE DECISION RO AVOID HIG-RISK BEHAVIORS,INCLUDING SEXUAL ACTIVITY AND THE USE OF TOBACC,ALCOHOL, ANF OTHER DRUGS. • WHEN YOU ABSTAIN FROM HIGH RISK BEHAVIORS, YOU SHOW THAT YOU VALUE YOUR OWN WELL BEING. • PROMOTING YOUR HEALTH • REGULARLY PARTICIPATING IN HEALTH PROMOTING BEHAVIORS WILL HELP YOU REACH A HIGH LEVEL OF WELLNESS.

LIFESTYLE FACTORS • ARE THE PERSONAL HABITS OR BEHAVIORS RELATED TO THE WAY A PERSON LIVES. • PEOPLE THAT PRACTICE POSITIVE HEALTH HABITS THEN TO LIVE HEALTHIER AND LONGER LIVES. • 8 HOURS OF SLEEP • EAT A HEALTHY BREAKFAST • NUTRITIOUS FOOD • 30 TO 60 MINUTES OF EXERCISE • ABSTAIN FROM TOBACCO,ALCOHOL,DRUGS

America spends $1.9 trillion each year on health care, or $6,280 per person.

Health Education includes providing accurate health information and teaching health skills to help people make healthy decisions. • THE NATION’S HEALTH GOALS • Healthy People-is a nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the U.S. • Look at the chart on page 22. overweight and obesity rates. Health disparities-differences in health outcomes among groups.

Becoming Health Literate • Know where to find health information • Decide if the information is correct • Assess the risks and benefits of treatment • Figure how much medicine to take • Understand tests results WHAT CAN I DO HEALTH LITERACY-REFERS TO A PERSON’S CAPACITY TO LEARN ABOUT AND UNDERSTAND BASIC HEALTH INFORMATION AND SERVICES.
