Profile – ER1 – P36350 • Male, 34, White Scottish • Lives alone with no professional help at home • On long term sick • A drug client • Tenure 10 years • Meets with key worker more than 2 - 3 times per month • Meets with GP 2-3 times per month • Prescribed 140ml of methadone every day • Takes 25mg of valium 20 days out of the month • Smokes cannabis approximately every day

Hypothesis • There are naturally occurring turning points in all life trajectories – birth of a child, getting a job, getting married, moving house etc • It is also possible that turning points in trajectories can be ‘induced’, and one of those possible transitions is a successful treatment episode • It is hypothesised that the reason why some potential turning points are actualised is based on the reserve of recovery capital that the individual possesses

TREATMENT V COMMUNITY RECOVERY – OBJECTIVE ENABLERS • Liverpool – 41.3% (in treatment – 4% • Calderdale – 40.8 (in treatment - 10%) • Wirral – 55.3% (in treatment – 6%) • 9 participants reported an acute housing problem in the last month • 51 individuals (34.7%) reported at least some paid employment in the last month • 38 individuals (26.8%) reported at least one day of school or college in the last month • On average, 55.3% of participants reported 8.8 days of activity in the last month • Overall, 47.2% of participants reported meaningful activities; 90.9% stable housing and 99.4% abstinence
