This interim review presents findings from AIST-QRS-06-0026 focused on detecting and tracking satellite image features tied to extreme physical events for sensor web targeting. We discuss technology development results, test outcomes, and proof-of-concept demonstrations. The presentation outlines work planned for the project’s remainder, critical issues, and an overview of cost and schedule status, including milestone chart and actual vs. projected expenditures. Additionally, we highlight dependencies, NOAA collaboration, and relevant publications, ensuring stakeholders are well-informed for decision-making.

Plans for ESTO Interim Review AIST-QRS-06-0026 Title: The Detection and Tracking of Satellite Image Features Associated with Extreme Physical Events for Sensor Web Targeting Observing
Required Elements • Primary Findings, Technology Development Results and Technical Status • Results of tests and proof-of-concept demonstrations • Description of work planned for remainder of project • Critical issues • Cost and Schedule status • Schedule slippage/acceleration • Schedule milestone chart for major tasks • Cost data sheet • List total costs committed, obligated and costed • Graphical representation of projected and actual project expenditures
Optional Elements • Background info to orient reviewers • Photos, illustrations, diagrams pertaining to research • How we fit with other NASA work • Dependencies and how we manage them • NOAA cooperation and follow-on support • Journal/conference publications and presentations
Logistics • 1.5 hour (90 min) review implies ~30 slides • Slides must be uploaded 2 days before review (June 1st or latest by 4th ) • Images must be reduced to ~100dpi for display, then compressed to jpeg for upload • Will need to record actions from the review in order to update slides and upload to Interim Report in e-Books
Presentation Outline • Project Background and Introductions • Technical status • Identification of Enhanced-V and CI cases and test data • Data preparation and pre-processing • Source Investigations and findings • CLASS, GSFC GOES Project and McIDAS • Source metadata identification • Phase I data flow: McIDAS, WCS, Detector Application • Initial configuration • data tests and demonstration • Enhanced-V Algorithms • Inputs, matrix fabrication, cross-correlation form, initial tests • Detector filters, structure definitions, initial feature rankings • Work planned for remainder of project • Phase II data flow: NSSL, WCS, WFS, Demo Clients • Parallax correction for GOES, storm reports, analysis winds • System upgrade and processing/staging of case studies • Enhanced-V and CI Algorithm case study results • Journal publications, conference presentations • Event detection support for sensor-web development • Issues: GMU system security and SA support on-site at GSFC
Cost and Schedule Status • Milestone slippage: • Overall WCS Phase I data flow was delayed one month • To resolve issues with GOES data sources, projection and grid resolution • To decide content and form of GOES metadata input to WCS • Updated milestone schedule • Cost data sheet • Commitments to GMU, UofWisc, and NSSL • Graph of projected and actual costs • total by month
