NEGATIVE DISCIPLINE • The command style coaching lends itself to negative discipline. • A. Coach can be mean and nasty by: • 1. use of blame, shame, and pain. • 2. use of public forum to demean players. • 3. instill fear. B. A negative approach can: 1. deny players of a learning opportunity. 2. forces players to quit under the abuse. 3. destroy a person’s self-esteem.

WHY DO STUDENT-ATHLETES MISBEHAVE? • 1. They are discouraged • 2. They believe they do not belong and are not significant to the team. • 3. They are intending to get revenge. • 4. They have quit.
CORRECTING BEHAVIOR • 1. Use discipline not punishment. • 2. Communicate a change in the behavior. • 3. Determine if the negative behavior broke team rules or the law. • 4. If the team rules were broken, initiate your consequences and be consistent and fair. • 5. If legal or police action is warranted, you are responsible for turning the matter over to appropriate persons.
