  1. Options for Revision to General Education Forum on Silver and Competency-Aligned Existing Core

  2. Voting Process The faculty votes on the options for revision to general education at UNR will unfold as follows: • 4/3—Forum on winning alternative and competency-aligned existing Core • 4/3-4/11—online vote on winning alternative and competency-aligned existing Core • 4/11 through end of semester, Provost will seek further recommendations from UCCC, Core Board

  3. Purposes of this Forum Members of the General Education Task Force will • Further inform faculty about the opportunities and challenges of implementing the Silver alternative or with aligning the existing Core with GETF-articulated competencies • Answer questions about the group’s implementation analysis and details of the voting document that emerged from that process

  4. Silver AlternativeOverview Emphasizes comparative experience with inquiry. Builds greater program flexibility into general education with substantialFocused Inquiry component: discipline-specific competencies and related foundational knowledge may be combined in various ways with cross-disciplinary competencies. Assumes integration in these combinations; also explicitly emphasizes synthesis and application in a senior capstone experience.

  5. Silver AlternativeKey Characteristics/Advantages • Developmental progression from fundamental knowledge, to focused inquiry, and finally to integrative experience. • Flexible option for students and departments; provides opportunities for discipline-specific offerings toward the new competencies. • Somewhat less structured than, but compatible with, the current Core; existing courses will require modification to address competencies.

  6. Competency-Aligned Existing CoreOverview • Emphasizes development of knowledge and skills, introduces a range of perspectives, and builds understanding of cultural and natural environments. • Fundamental skills are introduced early and enhanced with required sequences that establish prerequisite knowledge in specified disciplines. • Emphasizes integration with a specified humanities sequence, required cross-disciplinary study in diversity, and two capstones that feature synthesis and application.

  7. Competency-Aligned Existing CoreKey Characteristics/Advantages • Emphasizes fundamentals, followed by an integrated humanities sequence and discipline-focused courses. • Re-designed Core will be familiar and provide opportunities for refinement of a known curriculum. • Implementation of a redesigned Core will involve revising many classes in the current Core to directly address the newly articulated set of competencies.
