  2. Britain Dominates Ireland • 1700: British begin allow Scottish Protestants to claim land in Ulster (NE Ireland) • 1845: Irish Potato Famine kills millions, British give no help (despite United Kingdom status)

Irish Nationalism • 1916: British suspend self-rule, Ireland declares Independence, pick Éamonde Valera as President • 1900: Irish Brotherhood (IRB) forms to fight British rule • 1914: Britain offers self-rule if Irish help fight in WW I • De Valera & IRB lead Easter Rising, lose badly to British Discuss: Why do you think many Irish resisted the draft?

War of Independence • 1917: Michael Collins & Harry Boland form Irish Republican Army (IRA) , use guerilla tactics & target British G-Men • British send in Black & Tan Units, open fire at Rugby Match (Bloody Sunday,1920) • 1921: British PM Lloyd George wants to negotiate peace treaty • Éamonde Valera asks Michael Collins to go to London to negotiate a treaty, Collins reluctantly goes

Anglo-Irish Treaty & Irish Civil War • Irish Dáil(parliament) & Irish voters approve the treaty, however, De Valera & his supporters reject the treaty • Collins returns two months later with the Anglo-Irish Treaty, gives Ireland self-rule & N. Ireland remains in UK • 1922-23: Civil War between De Valera and Collins supporters breaks outs, Collins killed, De Valera eventually accepts treaty
