Increased Mortality Risk in Type 1 Diabetic Patients With Severe Hypoglycemia After Cardiovascular Events

DESCRIPTION

This study examines the link between prior severe hypoglycemic events and all-cause mortality in type 1 diabetes patients following major cardiovascular incidents in Sweden. Data from the Swedish National Diabetes Register were analyzed, revealing that 403 of 1,839 patients experienced severe hypoglycemia before their cardiovascular events. The findings indicated that patients with prior hypoglycemic episodes had a significantly higher risk of mortality – a 5-year cumulative mortality rate of 52.4% for myocardial infarction and 39.8% for stroke, underscoring the need for careful monitoring.

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS • Data were from the Swedish National Diabetes Register • Patients included those with type 1 diabetes who visited a clinic during 2002–2010 and experienced a major cardiovascular complication after the visit • Two-part model was estimated for all-cause mortality after a cardiovascular event: 1. Logistic regression for death within the first month 2. Cox proportional hazards model conditional on 1-month survival • 5-year cumulative mortality risk was estimated from the models for patients with and without prior diabetes complications Lung T.
