  2. Description Ursa Major is almost the most known constellation (excluding Orion). It contains The Big Dipper. The Big Dipper is not a constellation itself. In fact, it is an asterism that is used to locate Ursa Major. Ursa Major is also know as the plow, The Great Bear, and multiple names.

  3. Ancient Myth A long time ago, Zeus fell in love with a beautiful woman named Callisto. His wife, Hera, was frustrated with the situation. To help herself, she changed Callisto into a bear. In the woods Callisto’s son, Arcas, saw the bear in the woods and did not know it was his mother. The bear ran towards her son who was ready to kill her. Zeus saw this and changed him into a bear as well. Then he put the bears in the sky as neighboring constellations. Since Callisto sparkled in the sky with stars, Hera was again jealous. To satisfy herself, she made sure that bears would never set below the sea’s horizon like the other constellations.

  4. Location Ursa Major consists off the famous asterism, The Big Dipper. That asterism is an easy way to find the location of Ursa Major. The exact location is at 10.6 h (right ascension) and 55.38 degrees (declination). The best latitudes to be seen are 90 degrees and minus thirty degrees. During April (at nine o’clock), you see the constellation better than any other time of the year.
