What Does the Research Say About Improving Attendance? • The pattern of non-attendance starts early • Intervention in elementary years is the most effective • Whole school approaches are the best • A welcoming, supportive school environment is key • Engaging, relevant instruction improves attendance

  8. Research continued... • Relationships are key • Incentives for good and improved attendance make a difference • Early and on-going contact with family improves attendance • Clear and consistent attendance policies are necessary • Timely and appropriate supports for learning are important

  9. Attendance Projects • Started in September 2011 – two year grant to 15 school divisions • Focus of grant: evidence based practices that improve student attendance • Projects vary from single school initiatives, to clusters of schools within a division • Elementary, middle years or high school

  17. What we have learned so far… • Manitoba has very good average attendance • Attendance concerns are complex • Students with attendance from 80% and up tend to “fly under the radar” • Interventions need to be targeted to specific groups of students

  18. Next Steps • Use data to inform our actions • Provide a clear message to students, parents, community that regular daily attendance is critical for student success • Implement evidence based practices in schools • Continue to build partnerships
